1. When you install a new version of BOINC, should you first un-install the old version?

2. Is there an installation option that runs like the old "command line" version from Seti?

3. When the BOINC Manager loads at startup, it minimizes itself on my task bar (not the system tray) and won't go away. Can I kill that task without interupting the screensaver?

1. When you install a new version of BOINC, should you first un-install the old version?

It is usefull to do this, yes. Some versions even forced you to uninstall the previous version. No work should go lost though.

2. Is there an installation option that runs like the old "command line" version from Seti?

No... I say hesitantly.

You can install it as a service. Which is the closest to the Seti CLI you can go. Since when you install it as a service, you can run Boinc without running Boinc Manager.

What are you asking specificially?
Have you checked the options of Boinccmd.exe in a CLI box?
Start->Run, type cmd, hit enter
In the box, navigate to your Boinc directory. If default it is:
cd c:\\program files\\boinc {enter}
boinccmd --help {enter}
(yes, twice a c and twice a minus sign)

Only if you run BOINC as a service. And used the work around to get graphics & screen saver back.

But you do know that the screen saver takes up quite a bit of CPU power?

That's why Im asking. One of my Boinc systems is my file server, so I never really need to see the screen. I'd MUCH rather run a "command line" version there if possible.

Same may be true with the PVR that I built.

I'll check out those links this evening when my 1 year old isn't crawling on me.

On the server install as a service. Don't opt for launching Boinc upon a reboot or whatever. You do need an administrator account with password to install Boinc as a service.

Even if you have the BOINC manager available/running, it uses a negligable amount of CPU unless it is open, then it it usually barely detectable, almost always under 1% and that is with the window open (4% while opening).

In any case, closing the window, installing as a service and exiting the BOINC Manager will make least impact on the system. You could also use threadmaster to reserve some "headroom" under all cases.

I see this happen also (though intermittently). The solution (for me) is to click on the BOINCMGR icon in the System Tray, and then close it - it minimizes back to the system tray and clears the task bar as well.

I got this a lot also. I set the property of the Boinc Manager short-cut in the startup folder to run minimized. Now, it almost always goes to the tray now without showing in the task bar.
