Hello,

I want to run boinc on my homeserver (no gui) but keep getting the same error over and over again, when I try to connect the boinc-client with the bam account manager.

My Machine:

Linux 2.6.28-11-server #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 02:48:10 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Connected via router

I tried both the ubuntu repository version and the actual version from the homepage.

When I try

boinccmd --join_acct_mgr http://bam.boincstats.com Caldrac "******"

I get

poll status: operation in progress
poll status: operation in progress
poll status: unexpected XML tag or syntax

Port 80 is open (according to some ressources in the web boinc only needs 80 and some other ports locally to communicate with the manager)

I tried

URL/URI

quoting everything in all possible combinations

playing around with the user boinc (adding him manually/automatically)

putting down my firewall and

inserted "allow:all" into /etc/hosts.allow

adding --allow_remote_gui_rpc (which doesnt work somehow, resulting in the error "'--deamon' option detected")

successfully setting up a remote connection using the password system

downloading the sourcecode running a fulltextsearch on the error in order to find out, what the program is trying to parse and what poll status means (not sucessfully)

The most 'useful' information i found on the web was somebody, who resolved this with the comment: "it was cause I was trying to reconnect a host with out removing it's old profile"

Nevertheless I don't really get, how to connect this piece of information to a brand new installation without any configuration.

Is anybody out there who can point me towards a solution?

Did you create an account at the BAM! site?

If I search for user 'Caldrac', I get

Your search - caldrac - did not match any user

Are there any acct_mgr_*.xml files in your BOINC data directory (where client_state.xml resides)?

Yes, at least I am still able to login with "Caldrac" (created this account with uppercase) but login works with "caldrac", too.

I see, what you mean. The user search on the website is changed to lowercase and has no results. Strange...

Are there any acct_mgr_*.xml files in your BOINC data directory (where client_state.xml resides)?

2 of them:
* account_mgr_reply.xml
* account_mgr_request.xml

As I found out, boinc recreates them by exectuing "boinccmd --join_acct_mgr...". The reply seems to be - as you said - "User not found or password wrong.". (would be a nice thing for stdout by the way)

Within <acct_mgr_requst> there are 6 syntactically corrext xmltags (name, password_hash, host_cpid, domain_name, client_version, run_mode).

As only the password hash is sent, i dont think, special characters within the password could be a problem, could it?

I'll try to chance my username to lowercase letters... still doesn't work.

Ah. I found out, that I can successfully connecting with the weak authentification key.

Ah. Now I managed to connect by using my BOINCstats BAM ID. Great. Thank you, for your help, I wouldn't have found that out without.

Note: Now it even works using my username. Connecting with my weak authentification seems to have changed something.
