Hi there,

I am using BOINC on 2 laptops, one of which I rarely shut down when traveling, the other running 24/7.
The one that is running around the clock doesn't cause me problems but the other one does fairly frequently. Does BOINC officially support hibernation and preserves and protects the status of all the projects or am I asking for too much?

Thanks for your feedback.
Roland

PS: I am running it on Vista SP1 and XP SP3, both times BOINC version 6.10.18

Depends on what your problem is and if you set your preferences correctly.

To use hibernation, it is best to:
1. Set in your web-based preferences: "Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last xx minutes".
2. Set Windows to start hibernation 1 to more minutes after that.

So, for instance, you set the Suspend work option in BOINC to 15 minutes. Windows should then start hibernation after 16 or more minutes.

Sounds reasonable but I'm hibernating to switch between physical locations (office / home). In other words: I want to suspend pending WUs, go to another location and then resume work. I cannot use the pause function though as it auto-resumes after 1 hour. In the past that worked reliably but lately there's no guarantee that the WUs won't get corrupt. The Windows resume function eats battery which I would like to avoid.

Has anyone else noticed the behavior of BM and knows how to best deal with it?

Thanks.

That's not a bug, it's a feature ;-)

If you want to pause (not snooze), use the Activity menu to suspend. That'll remain suspended until you resume (by selecting "Run always" or "Run based on preferences").

Hibernating is similar to just "pulling out the power plug". With some computers, BOINC and the WUs survive; with others they don't.

Manually Suspend BOINC in the manager's menu. Just remember to set it running again when you get to the new location.
It may or may not be necessary to also menu Exit from BOINC.

edit
Beaten to it. :)

Thanks for all your responses. I will use the suspend open in BM going forward.
