I would have wanted to put this thread to the Promotion message board, but I preferred this one since it has more activity.
The following can be considered as questions, problems, requests whatever.
I would like to have on the message boards also a board entitled GPU Projects were people will come and talk about only GPU projects. To name a few:
1. I'm tired to loose a couple of hours every day searching other sites for new GPU projects, when I could 'watch' the official one.
2. My laptop doesn't have a powerful CPU (T6400 @ 2 GHz, the noise is pretty annoying) but my GPU is good enough (4650 mobility)
3. Developers could save time and not be bothered by other users asking them: when it's going to be ready the GPU version (I know I'm one of them).
4. It would promote more easily to have a dedicated board, since no other project has it (except for gpugrid, which is outside the point). I'm not saying other sites don't offer any additional information, like http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=471 or http://boincstats.com/forum/forum_thread.php?id=1774 but I bellieve it’s not enough
5. A new user wants to crunch on his GPU because he heard from someone that he can crunch on his GPU. He could come to this page and see what’s available and what kind of projects best suit them
A few suggestions would be to have a sticky containing all the GPU projects:
1. SETI (nVIDIA CUDA 2.3 MB, ATI – CAL 1.4 SETI BETA – open beta, OpenCL – coming soon)
And then a few topics to discuss each project
My opinion, don’t want to be a moderator (not enough time), just trying to save precious time.

A few suggestions would be to have a stick

OpenCL

Oh, don't get me started. That's too far away to be of any use.

At present you need the latest hardware available and even then OpenCL apps run slower than their CUDA and CAL counterparts. Double precision is not supported, graphics neither, while the drivers are of ridiculous size (120MB for the ATI videocard driver).

Best not go there for now. ;-)

I know I was pushing the envelope with OpenCL :)

My guess is that there is a fear that every boinc user will try to run the gpu version to have more credits. From my experience it's something like this:
On a laptop that has a 3470 mobility I use collatz(no cpu), on a xeon with a weak quadro I ran rosetta and WCG on 4 cores (on the GPU I run folding, but I'll switch to drugdiscovery or other medical based research, gpugrid is not good enough) and I'm thinking to install boinc manager with low cpu usage (around 30% on some other computers which I can get my hands on, if the deadlines are big enough for the projects).

If the fear is that GPU projects will take over the CPU projects, maybe somebody can also open an Optimized projects board (SSE 3+) and speed up the crunching.

As long as there is diversity, why not be updated :) ?

Is there currently any work for einstein, seti or hydrogen on CUDA?

Einstein: CUDA only, very early Beta, needs to be installed manually, doesn't make much use of GPU.
SETI: Production CUDA application, temporary shortage of work, hopefully more later today or next week at worst.
SETI Astropulse: very early third-party ATI Beta, in closed testing only.
Hydrogen: ???

For Einstein I'm using the cuda zip from http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/app_test.php#windowsCUDA . I've deleted the info related to the cpu files from the app_info, but I'm not getting any CUDA WUs.
This is what I get:
29/10/2009 16:26:35 Einstein@Home Message from server: To get more Einstein@Home work, finish current work, stop BOINC, remove app_info.xml file, and restart.
29/10/2009 16:26:35 Einstein@Home Message from server: No work sent
29/10/2009 16:26:35 Einstein@Home Message from server: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a version of Hierarchical S5 all-sky GW search #6.

Now I am sure it isn't going to come in the foreseeable future. The BOINC developers prefer any project developers with GPU problems to go to the email lists, while volunteers can post their problems here in the Q&A forum or in the BOINC client forum.

It is possible that future forums be added for app development, server maintenance etc. but even that's not certain yet. The email lists seem to suffice for that for now.
