I'm running Windows 7 x64 on my host machine, along with a virtual machine using VMware Workstation 6.5. The virtual machine is running Windows 7 x86 at the moment and is used mainly as a sandbox for browsing, email etc.

I run BOINC on my host (x64) and have it set to basically use whatever resources it wants. I rarely find that it interfers with performance even under heavy use with other appplications when configured like this.

However...

When BOINC is running, it does not seem to treat the virtual machine's processes in the same way. Having BOINC running like this whilst trying to use the virtual machines makes it impossible to use.

How can I keep BOINC setup to crunch as hard as it likes, but not have it interfering with my virtual machine?

BOINC isn't "treating VM processes differently"; it doesn't even know or care what other processes are running on your computer. It just runs in "low priority" and lets the operating system care about the rest...

Sorry I forgot about this thread. Yeah I eventually worked out how to set the virtual machines priorty to a level thats permanently 'above normal' and it has since been running fine.

Prior to this however BOINC was definitely screwing the virtual machine around. Irrespective of the fact that the projects run in low priorty, the BOINC manager and its assosicated processes were running at the same priorty as the virtual machine (i.e. normal) and thats what was dicking it around.

Anyway problem solved.
