Just installed 6.10.7. It connect to the client okay, but shows 0 cpus availabe. Nothing is running, it is all in waiting to run and seems to be cycling thru the same projects over and over. Will let it run a while to see if there is any changes, if not will go back to 6.6.36 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <measurement_debug> 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <work_request_factor> 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.7 for windows_intelx86 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8k zlib/1.2.3 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Running under account Owner 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9] 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Home x86 Edition, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Memory: 2.00 GB physical, 5.85 GB virtual 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Disk: 74.53 GB total, 30.39 GB free 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Local time is UTC -6 hours 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM cuInit() returned 100 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM No ATI Libraries found. 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM No coprocessors 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Not using a proxy 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Version change (6.6.36 -> 6.10.7) 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM http://193.144.240.190/nnsimu/ URL http://193.144.240.190/nnsimu/; 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Reading preferences override file Is there something in your global_prefs_override.xml file (or in cc_config.xml (<ncpus>)) that could cause that message? Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

No. in the global file the max CPU is set to 100 and in the cc file the debug cpu parameters are turn off. Going back to 6.6.36 and everything is correct. It has to have something to do with how is does its benchmarks. I do not have any ATI or GPU boards. think maybe its getting confused some how. You can see what I run in the messages attached to my previous message. Thanks for you suggestion. Here is what I get when I go back to 6.6.36. 9/23/2009 1:34:07 PM Reading preferences override file Double-check <ncpus> in cc_config.xml. Back in the day, 0 meant 'ignore me, use whatever the OS tells you'. Now, 0 means zero, and you have to use -1 for 'whatever the OS says'. |

The original post indicated the presence of a config file. 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <measurement_debug> Did you try deleting it and restarting Boinc? Boinc V 7.4.36 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB NVidia 470 |

Will change the parameters in cc to -1 as suggested and reload 6.10.7. This worked, now have tasks running and the correct CPUs showed up as well as the floating points. Are there any other parameters that should be changed from 0 to -1? Is this new with this version? ![]() |

Will change the parameters in cc to -1 as suggested and reload 6.10.7. To be honest, I thought the change came into effect quite some time ago, and I'm surprised v6.6.36 worked. The full list is at Client configuration. There are several new(ish) tags, but I think ncpus is the only one where the default value has been changed to mean something completely catastrophic. But unless you have an explicit need to use a non-standard setting, just delete the whole file. BOINC doesn't actually need any of it. |

Is this new with this version? Since ever and always since this option was available it has said (in my FAQs at least) in the description of the flag: <ncpus> Act as if there were N CPUs: run N tasks at once. This is for debugging, i.e. to simulate 2 CPUs on a machine that has only 1. Don't use it to limit the number of CPUs used by BOINC; use general preferences instead. For use with CUDA: When you want to do CUDA only, not use the CPUs at all, set <ncpus>0</ncpus> If you want to use all CPUs, either omit using this option, or set <ncpus>-1</ncpus> Now, of course you don't have to read what each option does, but perhaps for future reference it would be prudent if you did. 9/23/2009 1:34:06 PM Unrecognized tag in cc_config.xml: <measurement_debug> These are added by an add-on application, like BoincView or similar. The flags in question are no longer used and long since been replaced by other, stronger flags. Last thing on the agenda, you're running an alpha product. You willingly installed it despite the warning that you're running a development product. Are you a registered Alpha tester, as in, did you register yourself to the Alpha email list to follow posts on there and add in your bit if you find trouble of your own? If you did, then why do you ignore the warning at the top of every alpha release that we told about on these forums, through this thread? You know... the bit you probably skip by now: This is a development version of BOINC. Do not use it if you do not plan to use it for Alpha or Beta testing. Expect parts of it to be broken, or in the least to work in a different way than you are used to. Being an Alpha tester comes with a certain responsibility of knowing what you set (last month, last week, yesterday, 2 hours ago) and else put everything back to default settings before you raise a (panicked) warning. Of course that leaves the question, if you're not an Alpha tester, then why are you running the software in the first place? But alas. Comme ci, comme ça. |

Hello everyone, long time no see... Is this new with this version? I've experienced exactly this same problems some 2-3 days ago (interestingly, nCi project QCN continued to crunch :-) and solved it yesterday. My previous version was 6.6.36 and I've also used the same <ncpus>0</ncpus>for years... Peter PS: According to the Client configuration's history, the <ncpus> official description apparently changed on 16:18, 9 February 2009. BTW, I do like the new forum editor ;-) |

The <ncpus> flag (debug purposes only) has been available for longer than any of us needs to worry about. As Pepo says, the description in the Wiki was changed by Dave A on 9 February 2009, which was fairly early in the intensive CUDA fine-tuning that led to the functional v6.6.20 and later clients. The Wiki note reflects changeset [trac]changeset:17160[/trac] from four days earlier, which is where the underlying function was changed: - client: if ncpus is zero in cc_config.xml, honor it. Unfortunately, this is yet another of the changesets which never got copied into the boinc_core_release_6_6a stable branch, which perhaps explains why v6.6.36 doesn't behave as described in the Wiki..... Perhaps the lead check-in note explains why Rom overlooked it: - web: add another team stats link |
