Message 27367 - Posted: 14 Sep 2009, 3:14:48 UTC

Soon after starting BOINC Windows tells me BOINC has stopped working and must be closed. I hit OK, it does not actually close the program. I then get error message after error message that BOINC manager cannot connect with the client, I hit try again and windows tells me it has stopped working again. The cycle goes on and on and on.... Sometimes if I let it just sit there it will start to work again, if I touch it, it starts the cycle over.

Deleted BOINC and reinstalled, did not help.

Vista 64 Home Premium SP2
Intel Quad Q9300 2.5 GHz
4GB RAM
HDD space aplenty

Love BOINC, been with it since it was just SETI, about to just do folding@home if I cannot get this figured out soon

Message 27368 - Posted: 14 Sep 2009, 4:22:27 UTC - in response to Message 27367.

The 2 parts of BOINC, the gui (manager), and the core client, (which does the actual work), communicate on port 31416, and if something blocks this, then the manager can't see what the client is doing.
There are 2 common causes of this:
1) Windows
2) An AV, of which ZoneAlarm is possible the worst.

I think more info will be needed:
BOINC version
Was anything changed on the computer just before this started to happen? (Such as upgrade the OS or BOINC version.)
Is BOINC installed in protected mode ( old service mode), or unprotected (old single user)?

A further question:
How many tasks are listed in the Tasks tab (more or less than 1000)?

Only 2 tasks, both einstein@home that are waiting to report (been waiting to report for days now in messages the server says it has already received the info). Issues started when I got a new computer and switched to Vista. I am using the newest version 6.6.36, I'm the only user on the computer so it has full privileges.

After the switch I stopped using BOINC for months but it was still one of my startup programs, a couple weeks ago I forgot to close it right away and noticed it was working so I let it run and updated it. Had an issue every once in a while so I uninstalled everything a couple days ago then reinstalled. Same issue as before then now it won't run at all, just a constant cycle of windows trying to close it and it trying to connect to the client.

Okay, obviously boinc.exe terminates with an error and as a result boincmgr.exe can't connect to it. But what's the error of boinc.exe? Are there any entries in your event log?

Would you mind giving a link to your machine? There are quite a few Robs at Einstein.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Because of problems with the added security features in Vista, when BOINC version 6 was released last year, the location of the installed files changed.
These are now split between the BOINC executables, and all of the data files.
This is documented here.
Did you allow the installer to make this split?

I didn't change much if anything form the default install, I remember noticing the split and letting it install to two different locations.

Event Log? I looked through BOINCs folder and did not see "event long". My account is quickone86 for einstein as it is for almost all projects, not sure if that helps Gundolf Jahn. Not sure how to send a link.

I use McAfee AV, same one I have been using for 5 years now (updated of course), was not an issue before, have not gotten any messages for it about BOINC.

Event viewer: Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌ Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Lots and lots of entries for BOINC in the event viewer, it said it was closed because it unexpectedly stopped working with the faulting module being MSVCR80.dll some of the time and boinc.exe being it 2/3 of the time.

Not sure what is important and what isn't just by looking at it, have not looked through event logs before.

If your userid at Einstein is 93077, then it's very unlikely that the hostid of your computer is also 93077.

The user 93077 at Einstein is called "quickone86". Is that you?

The host 93077 at Einstein belongs to someone who has hidden his computers.

If you click Your account (here or at the Einstein homepage), then scroll down to "Computers on this account" and click "View", which computer ID is shown then?

Okay, the link to your computer is then 1938409 and the link to its task list http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/results.php?hostid=1938409.

This list shows one running S5R5 task, downloaded 14 Sep 2009 20:55:09 UTC, and two successfully completed tasks, one S5R5 and one ABP1, both reported on 12 Sep 2009.

The other five tasks show "Client detached".

I had hoped to find a task that shows a runtime error message, to further analyse your problem, but no luck.

From MilkyWay, your computer (hostid=70110) has downloaded 241 tasks since 12 Sep 2009, the first of which are due 15 Sep 2009. But that doesn't help us either.

If you reopen the event viewer and double click one of the BOINC errors, is there something explaining the reason for the failure?

Gruß,
Gundolf
[edit]In your BOINC data directory, there are two files named stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt. Are there any messages in them to enlighten the problem? (Please don't post the complete files)
I'm off to bed now, it's 2AM here. Back in about 7 hours :-)[/edit]

no explanation that I can see other than it stopped working unexpectedly.

I looked through the BOINC folder and did not see either of those files

They'll be in your BOINC DATA directory. Also check stderrgui.txt when you find them.

Access Denied message.

Please go Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Management Control.

- Expand the 'Local Users and Groups' tree node.
- Click on the Groups tree node.
- Double click on the 'boinc_admins" group.
-- Is the user account that you are using at this moment in there?

Ok, can you then check on the BOINC Data directory if you have permission to write to it with the account you're using?
