I was trying to install BOINC on a computer running Scientific Linux which is built around Fedora. I tried the usual yum install but it didn't work. So I had to take the difficult route. I downloaded boinc_6.6.36_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh, placed it in the folder /usr and ran it. A new folder BOINC was created under /usr containing files like binstall.sh, boinc, boinccmd, boincmgr plus a few others. I tried various things to get boinc up & running like typing in the instructions from the binstall.sh & clicking on the executable files. But it is not working. The system monitor lists a process called boinc but it is sleeping. I am at a loss, so help me out. Please remember that I an very new to Linux, so tailor your responses accordingly.

I have managed to attach to projects and start crunching by using command line interface (./boinccmd -- project_attach etc.).But I cannot get the graphical user interface running. Is it the limitation of the version of linux I am using ?

*sigh*

No I don't think it's a limitation of SL.

Try starting the core client with ./run_client, put it into the background and then start the manager with ./run_manager

See if that works for you. I'll bug Rom again and see if we can't get that fixed and a new 6.6 build out.

Sorry for the late reply. I got busy with a few other things in the past two weeks or so.

I have tried out your prescription but it is not working. Anyways I can get boinc up and running by clicking on the executable file "boinc" every time I start the PC. But I would like to run it as a daemon. Can you help me out with it ?

Thanks. I have managed to run BOINC as a daemon. But I haven't managed to get the the graphical user interface up and running. I have found that I cannot install basically anything using yum install. It keeps saying no packages available.

There might not be a package in the SL repos. I know there is one in the Fedora one tho.

These are the best directions for installing I know of. Download the .sh from Berkeley, unpack it and then follow Eric's directions. They take you through creating a user for BOINC to run under and installing the init.d script to start at boot.
