I have BOINC clients running under Linux on five computers, four without X installed. I'd like to use boincmgr to control them. If I try to "Select computer" from the one that has X, it opens a window that says it can't connect to a client on the specified computer. In the xterm from which boincmgr was launched, it says

connect: Operation now in progress
init_poll: get_socket_error(): 111
init_poll: get_socket_error(): 111
already tried both ports, giving up

There is a chance I could figure out on my own why it isn't working, if only the error messages actually had some information content (e.g., which ports?). I suspected the firewalls of blocking traffic, but iptables is stopped on both computers. If I were to want to turn on my firewalls, what should I put in the configuration file to allow boincmgr on one computer to control boinc on another one?

Have you put in the remote_hosts file? Changed the password in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file? Most of the data is in the Wiki on remote control and ports; I know 1043 and 31416...

I've created both of these files and continue to get the same error box and text error messages. The remote_hosts.cfg file has the IP number for the computer attempting to do the controlling. I also made a copy called simply remote_hosts. Both in the BOINC directory on the machine I'm trying to control -- and to which I'm connected via ssh from the machine hoping to do the controlling. The gui_rpc_auth.cfg file had what looked like an encrypted password. The Wiki says a blank password, indicated by a newline is OK, so I moved aside the original file and made a new one with just a newline. No joy. Any more ideas?

Do I have to add port 1043 or 31416 to the /etc/services file?

Apparently boinc doesn't respond to SIGHUP. After stopping and restarting boinc on the eight computers in my basement, I can control it on a few of them. Some refuse connections (remote_hosts.cfg contains controlling computer's IP number on all eight computers), some insist my password is wrong (gui_rpc_auth.cfg has only a newline on all eight computers). As boinc starts on each computer it says "Remote control allowed." Any more ideas?

Restart all the computers (or at least BOINC) be sure to restart the computer you plan to control from first. The computer that will be controling needs to running first so the other computers can find it on the network. It may take a restart to get the password file read properly as well.
