Hi Ageless, thank you for your help. I have done what you mentioned and then started again. I have seen again two clients in the taskmanager. One was killed by windows after a few seconds. The manager started to connect to the remaining client and after a while he could connect. The output was: 21.10.2009 20:34:44 Starting BOINC client version 6.10.16 for windows_x86_64 21.10.2009 20:34:44 log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 21.10.2009 20:34:44 Libraries: libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8k zlib/1.2.3 21.10.2009 20:34:44 Data directory: C:\BOINC 21.10.2009 20:34:44 Running under account Olaf Nowitzki 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Processor: 4 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz [Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7] 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Processor: 6.00 MB cache 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 pni 21.10.2009 20:35:41 OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Enterprise x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00) 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 8.00 GB virtual 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Disk: 119.75 GB total, 95.92 GB free 21.10.2009 20:35:41 Local time is UTC +2 hours 21.10.2009 20:35:41 NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 260 (driver version 19062, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.3, 896MB, 582 GFLOPS peak) 21.10.2009 20:35:52 Not using a proxy 21.10.2009 20:36:04 Can't rename current state file to previous state file; Zugriff verweigert (0x5) 21.10.2009 20:36:04 No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 21.10.2009 20:36:04 Preferences limit memory usage when active to 2047.51MB 21.10.2009 20:36:04 Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 3685.52MB 21.10.2009 20:36:04 Preferences limit disk usage to 10.00GB 21.10.2009 20:36:04 This computer is not attached to any projects 21.10.2009 20:36:04 Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions Will this help you? I will try to remove the data directory from C:\ to an other partition to see whether this will help or not. |

You did split the BOINC directory and the Data directory, didn't you? I mean, you didn't put both the path for the executables and the rest of the files to the same directory? Can you check the permissions for the C:\BOINC directory? Is the username you're using BOINC with in the permissions? (You can also check if your user name is part of the boinc_master group). I have sent word to one of the developers on your double starting boinc.exe It shouldn't do that. |

Yes, I splitted the directories like I did since the option was available. But, you´re remark with the user rights is the golden goal. I checked the permissions and my useraccount was missing. After manual addition boinc worked well with data-directory "C:\Boinc". The error, I think, comes from copying the data-directory of the old windows installation on an other partition as a backup. After installation of the new OS I copied this folder back to C:, but the user rights were not changed, so I have had no permission to the folder. Anyway, with your help the problem was solved and boinc works well. Thank you! |

All right. :-) That leaves the weird thing of the BOINC client starting up twice. I am running that one past the developers though. Word of advice, when you do a new clean up (somewhere in the future, or after you reinstalled the OS) add the data directory first, then install BOINC and point the installer to where the data directory is. That way the permissions will be set correctly. Can you double check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run how many entries there are for boincmgr.exe /a /s ? Can you also check if you have an entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BOINC and if so, what is in it? |

Can you double check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run how many entries there are for boincmgr.exe /a /s ? Also might be a good idea to look in the Startup folders (both your own, and the 'All users' one), to see if there's anything left over from previous versions in there. Or even go the whole hog and look at all the possible auto-run startup options with msconfig. |

The thing here is that it's not a double starting BOINC Manager that's the problem, but a double starting boinc.exe Unless started as a service Boinc.exe never started on its own or had a link from any of the usual Startup folders, it was always started by the Manager. |

The thing here is that it's not a double starting BOINC Manager that's the problem, but a double starting boinc.exe Yes, but according to the book boinc.exe is never started twice, ever. So it's already doing something not anticipated by the BOINC developers. One possibility is a user-created shortcut to boinc.exe somewhere. Best to spend just a few seconds checking for that remote possibility. Always expect the unexpected. |

Yes, but according to the book boinc.exe is never started twice, ever. Never say (n)ever. Using the --allow_multiple_clients start-up switch on boinc.exe, you can run multiple instances of the client. |

Can you double check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run how many entries there are for boincmgr.exe /a /s ? I have checked both pathes: 1: only one entry 2: no entry |

With thanks, then neither Rom, nor I, know where to look any further. It may be a fluke. Since it doesn't seem to impair your running of BOINC at this moment, my feeling is to forget about it for now. |

I think so, too. Now my boinc-installation works well and it is good so! Thank you again! |
