My name is John Cooney and I am a project lead at Intel. I wanted to share with the BOINC community a project that we are about to launch called Progress Thru Processors. Intel is sponsoring Progress Thru Processors which is a Facebook application developed in association with GridRepublic and BOINC. Progress Thru Processors will feature Rosetta@home, Climateprediction.net and Africa@home (malariacontrol.net), but participants are not required to join these, and can add any BOINC project once the application is added to their profile. Intel has been a supporter of volunteer computing for many years, dating back to SETI@home. We felt that by combining the networking power of Facebook with the promise of volunteer computing we could attract large numbers of new participants many of whom may never have even heard about volunteer computing. In support of the project, the BOINC team is adding some interesting new features to the client, including an automatic proxy detection system which, when finished, will allow Intel employees and others within corporate IT environments to more easily participate in volunteer computing on their work PCs. Our plan is to launch a public beta version on Monday, but I would like to share early access to the application with people in this forum. We hope you'll enjoy it; please do let us know what you think. http://apps.facebook.com/processors/new.php Thanks, John Cooney Intel Corporation |

Sorry, I do not get it. Is this just a new team, a new app, a manager, what? http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

It's just a new app for Facebook people who aren't/weren't currently running BOINC. Or, for that matter, had/have never even heard of BOINC and distributed computing before. For the rest of us, it's nothing new to change. |

O.K., I did it, I am still confused. One of the pages said I needed to join Grid Republic. Also, I got nothing to download and install. http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

Progress Thru Processors is a Facebook application which is linked with GridRepublic the account manager working to promote interest and involvement in BOINC volunteer computing. Progress Thru Processors is designed to make it simple and easy to get started with BOINC projects, manage them, and share with their friends. New users can benefit through the quick login to join, discover, and manage projects and from the automated program and manager setup. Current BOINC users gain the ability to manage and join projects from Facebook and be able to share with their network their support and contributions. I have a friend who has participated in Progress Thru Processors and has about 25,000 credits. He found out about and would like to join my BOINC-wide team but doesn't want to lose his credits. Is there a way he can log into the BOINC websites projects he's participating in (currently the three default Progress Thru Processors projects--Rosetta, CPDN, and Africa@home) to join my BOINC-wide teams on those projects, or is PTP handled completely separately? |

When one joins a new team, one retains one's credits. The old credits stay with the cruncher but do not go to the new team. New credits for the cruncher will go to the new team. http://sciencesprings.wordpress.com http://facebook.com/sciencesprings |

Hi, I just want to know how much internet this progress thru processors uses. I really want to help, but I have limited cap and the internet in South Africa is not that cheap. Is there maybe a way that I can limit the the internet usage of the progress thru processors software or maybe turn it on and off when I have WiFi access? If I contribute like 5MB per day, would that be usefull? |

You can set in the BOINC software how much bandwidth you want it to use per day. Transfer at most X Mbytes every Y Days. This value can also be set through most project website preferences. |
