Hello, After upgrading to v6.6.36 I have noticed a small problem when trying to attach to a project. In the list of available projects, some are grayed out attempting to attach throws a dialog box saying "this project may not have work for your type computer" and won't let me attach to the project. In this case, Spinhenge. I am signed up for 6 projects total (and have been for a long time. I first noticed this problem after thinking I wanted to test Windows 7. But after deciding Win 7 isn't ready for me, I formatted and went back to Win XP SP3 (current on updates) but Spinhenge is still grayed out and it gives me the dialog box. My system is an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 4gigs ram, ATI Radeon X1650 Pro video and I use Firefox v3.5.1 (also with regular updates) and all of the 6 projects I run (including Spinhenge) have run on this same PC configuration in the past with no issues. a couple weeks after the format/install I got a bad virus and had to format and reinstall again. Once again the same thing. So, I thought maybe it was just a fluke with my system or something I an running now and not before. But this time, I didn't install half the progs I had before and still the dialog box. I am also running BOINC (same 6 projects) on 4 other pcs WinXP and Spinhenge runs fine on them. So, now I am here looking for help because it seems that it might be a bug in the new version. Any Ideas?

Newer versions of BOINC allow the projects to get tighter control of what work is sent to what type of computer. So a work type that requires, say, SSE3 won't be sent to computers that don't have this. Likewise with the amount of memory, etc.
Although there may be another reason for your problem.

What was the version of BOINC that you used before the upgrade?
Is there anything on the Spinhenge web site about types of computer supported/not supported?

It may be that Spinhenge hasn't informed Boinc of the OS it has application for. It is grayed out on mine also although I'm crunching the project. You need only enter the project URL http://spin.fh-bielefeld.de in box provided to attaching to projects that Boinc doesn't have information on.

I was using 6.4.?? and it worked fine. I have been crunching the same 6 projects (almost) from the start. And there is nothing on the Spinhenge site different than it has been. I think they all work on windows systems. I have been running WinXP for a long time and have been upgrading my system(s) on a regular basis. Not to mention have been running all my projects on WinXP SP3 since the time SP3 came out. Seems more like something changed in BOINC with the most recent versions. or perhaps Spinhenge no longer has work for WinXP machines but like I said earlier, my other systems running BLOINC are receiving and sending WU's to Spinhenge with no problems.

I have tried adding the Spinhenge project. It doesn't happen. I get a dialog box stating this project has no work for your computer type. I run WinXP (32bit) SP3. It's not like I am the only one using that OS, so there must be a problem somewhere else.

I am using an account manager BOINC Manager. Same as I have been using for years. The only thing that has changed is the version of BOINC and maybe soem hardware upgrades....but nothing recently and certainly nothing since I noticed the problem. I guess I am going to look for BOINC V 6.4 and remove the current version to see if I still have the problem.

Hmmm.....I just noticed that on the BOINC project list page there are a few projects that have "Unknown" listed for project OS. So, either they have decided to stop all new work for project users that don't currently have the project connected or a glitch in the software that takes the info for new work from a database and since that project is listed as "Unknown OS" nobody new can connect.

That project list has "Unknown", because the people who post here and created the list, don't have the time to constantly go around all of the projects to see what they support, and then keep the list up to date.

If someone has a problem with a particular project, then that person should look at the project's web site and find out for themselves if their type of hardware/OS is supported.
And projects can and do change their applications to suit their work. Which amy cause some computers to become unsuitable, unless there's a choice that can be made in the account prefs.

e.g. On cpdn, there are several different types of climate models that can be selected.
One of these requires a minimum of 1.5Gigs of ram. The server won't send these to a computer with less than this.
Another requires computers that have SSE2, so older computers will just crash these models. And there's currently no way to select out those computers. Users have to do this themselves, by only selecting other model types in their prefs.

Something similar may happen with Spinhenge, so you'll need to search their forum pages for info.

In the boinc Data folder, there is a file named all_projects_list.xml which contains the projects you see in the attach list. Checking with 6.6.38, there are 3 projects that don't contain any info for the <platforms> tag. They are Chess960, Spinhenge, and Superlink.

You can manually edit this file by stopping both the boinc client and manager, opening the xml file in a text editor and adding your platform in the appropriate place. The platforms section under Spinhenge should look like this:

<platforms>
     <name>i686-pc-linux-gnu</name>
     <name>windows_intelx86</name>
     <name>windows_x86_64</name>
</platforms>

After saving the file, restart the client and manager. You should now be able to attach to Spinhenge.

Actually, I need to correct myself. Even with the message you should still be able to attach. Click OK on the message box, and the Project URL is filled in, click Next and you can fill in your account info and attach.
