I'm running Boinc v.5.2.13 and finally everything seems to be working. It's processing info and the Seti screensaver is working properly. I still think the whole process is ridiculously complicated compared to the original Set@home which anyone could install and use right from the get go, and the attitudes towards people who are having trouble have been annoyingly condescending. When you're asking the whole world for help, you should create a program that anyone can use right away. But I digress.

My problem is that I leave my computer running 24/7, but after the monitor has powered down at night and I come out the next mornign and "wake" it up, the seti screensaver has frozen on my screen and I can't get it to go away! The only thing that's worked has been a hard reboot. Even cntrl-alt-delete doesn't bring anything up. I can see my cursor over the frozen screensave, but not hint of Windows. If this keeps up I'll have to remove boinc.

For the record, I'm running Windows XP Pro svc pack 2, on a 1.5 Ghz Intel P4 with an ATI Radeon graphics card. I have the latest drivers for the graphics card. My screensaver activates after 10 minutes, the monitor turns off after 2 hours and the hard drives never turn off.

Can anyone help?

Best suggestion I can give from the BOINC perspective is to not use the SETI screensaver. You'll get better crunching time if you use "blank", and I believe there may be a problem with the "power saver" approach that shuts off the monitor and video card while SETI is running.

You might take the screensaver problem to the SETI boards, someone there might be more able to help, and they'll be able to pull up the details about your computer, which we can't do here. If you're running a project with no screensaver, and the BOINC screensaver kicks in instead, and you have problems with _it_, then this would be the proper place to get help.

Remember, SETI is a project that runs under BOINC, along with many others. SETI problems don't necessarily have anything to do with BOINC itself. If you haven't attached to another project besides SETI, I would suggest that you do that - I think you'll see the differences then, and it's always a good idea to be attached to more than one project.

Try setting a blank time in the BOINC screensaver settings, this may prevent the lockups overnight.

Sorry about the attitudes, it gets hard to politely answer the same question over and over again sometimes.

Also, you might want to give up running Rosetta screensaver. I have exactly the same problem with my ThinkPad. I can tell that OS (winXP prof, sp2) is responding underneath the screensaver screen, but operating windows blinfolded is kind of tricky.

It's getting frustraiting though, that after all - you do have one platform but in order to post this message I needed to go through registration all over again: the same login/email as with seti, yet cross-project ID just didn't work. Slightly messy.

Cheers,

These forums are about BOINC. They have nothing to do with SETI, which is why people have to register here separately to any other project.
