Hello.
When I'm running BOINC manager (v.6.6.20) I cannot attach to any project. I get message:
"BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC clinet. Please use the 'Advanced\Select Computer...' menu option up to a BOINC clinet. To connect to your local computer use 'localhost' as the host name"
So I'm selecting Advanced\Select Computer, in computer name typing: localhost and leaving password blank. Then I get message:
"BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client.(...)"
What I'm doing wrong?

Make sure you allow both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe through your firewall. These parts of BOINC talk to each other on TCP port 31416.

boinc.exe needs to be allowed to connect to the internet as well on TCP ports 80 and 443.

I'm trying to the same thing with a Mandriva Linux box. And I'm getting the same error.

I've had an older version of BOINC running for years, and suddenly it quit -- giving me this same message. I downloaded the newest version, and got the same message. I'm on a PowerMac G5 running OSX 10.4.11, and am NOT very good at digging through software to correct this crap. If it doesn't work, I'll just start turning the box off instead of donating the time!

I've just gone through the steps you suggested, and have had no success in connecting. When I enter "localhost", the password field is autofilled, and the connection attempt fails. The same happens when I manually enter the password from gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

Any other suggestions? I'm running this from home, on a dsl phone line.

While you're waiting for Dagorath, a little more info for you:
The type of line, etc, doesn't matter, because BOTH of the items are inside your computer.
The client is the 'hidden' part of BOINC which does the work; also called the 'worker', or 'daemon' part of BOINC. The manager is just a gui which allows you to see what the client is doing.
These two parts exchange data via port 31416. (Rememberable as PI.) And this connection can be blocked by firewalls.

I've done that. Three or four times. BOINC manager is still uncooperative.

OK, I've changed something. I DID download and install the ridiculously frequent FireFox update -- one a few days ago, and just now the latest. I have NOT changed anything else. Maybe rearranged the dust on the keyboard, but nothing more than that.

I may not be a computer geek, but I'm not a newbie, either.

I just did a 'net search for: firewall security settings mac
Couple of million results; this is one of them.

I checked that link out; the options available in System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall/Advanced don't seem to allow modification of use of port 31416, but there is a very limited list presented, so it might be accessible to someone who knows the system better than I do.

I have no idea how to find out if the client is running or not. Opening BOINC Manager to the Disk page shows total disk usage by BOINC: 0 bytes, free: 0 bytes, used by other programs: 0 bytes (which obviously is NOT true...).

So I guess I'll wait around until a Mac expert stumbles across this thread.

The reason that there's nothing in BOINC manager is because of what I said earlier: the manger allows you to see what the client is doing. And if the 2 aren't talking, then all of the fields in the manger will be blank.
In Windows, one uses Task Manager to see what is running.

Try doing a 'net search on the words that I used. Also try some other words.
Only Mac users will know what words to look for.

I installed boinc from the shell script found on the home page. I was able to install from the script and open the boinc manager. I did as you said and filled in the password from the gui_auth_rpc.cfg file using localhost as the computer. No joy. From the recent posts on this thread, i can now assume that the manager and the client aren't talking to each other over port 31416. How do I open that port to get those two programs talking to each other?

I am on a Mac and the Mac answers seemed to have stopped.

Lately, I have been having the same problem. I was running Boinc Manager/Client 6.6.19. Periodically, it would not display results (I.E., the Client was not reporting to the Manager, I get it.)

I installed Boinc 6.6.29 thinking that somehow the client was having some type of issue.

I ran the Disk Utility and repaired permissions. As a check, I changed the permissions of Boinc Data. Upon restarting Boinc Manager it complained that the permissions were wrong and made me re-install it.

The Mac applications that lets you know what is running or not are the Acitivity Monitor and less intuitively the Monitor with the command Top.

The Activity Monitor shows that "Boinc" is running between 1 and 14 percent of the CPU.

The Monitor > Top shows "BoincManager" running and using between 1.3 and 2.5% which is different times of course since I had to switch windows and spaces to see what is going on.

As for the port 31416, I am still searching for a way to change it since the only firewall installed is the Apple OS X one. As I continue to search for that, maybe this crash report for boinc will help more

BOINC 6.6.20
Win XP Pro 32bit SP3

BOINC Manager loses its connection so all projects and tasks etc are blank.
Message in lower right side of BOINC Manager says Connecting to localhost
When this happens it says Connected to localhost 6.6.20. Now all the Projects are listed. Good.

Now try to set a Project to get new work. Allow new tasks.
Message says Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait
Screen loses all the projects. BAD.
Lower right says Connecting to localhost.

Rinse and Repeat

Only started recently. Does this on two computers so far.

Tried upgrading to latest BOINC. Didn't help.

Tried uninstalling and re-installing bOINC. Didn't help.
Tried uninstalling BOINC, using Regedit to clear every trace of BOINC. Reboot reinstall BOINC. Didn't help.

Running No Prime Left Behind now.

Note: I also upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.7 about that time. I still have not found an easy way to set a port on Mac OS X. I did find a unix command line statement that supposedly allowed me to activate the boinc port. ... I will look for it again.

Same thing here - cannot connect. Running Snow Leopard on a MBP. Is there an easy fix?

You don't say which version of BOINC you're running, but I assume it's an older 6.6

All the fixes (for screen saver etc.) for BOINC on Snow Leopard are in the upcoming BOINC 6.10 range. You can test 6.10.13 from here.

If it helps anyone else in future - I just had this problem on a Mac running Snow Leopard. It turned out that I had somehow managed to get a very old version of BOINC (6.2.x). I grabbed a more recent one (6.10.21) and it worked first time. Make sure you're on the latest stable version and try that.
