Installed BOINC 6.6.17 in protected mode on a new computer with Windows XP Pro x86 SP3 on a user in Administrator group. Made sure to not allow other users to control BOINC. That is all good. 1. Creating new users (limited or administrative): BOINC Manager starts (in Systray) when a user logs in. Limited users gets a message they aren't authorized to manage the client and should ask a sys admin to add them to boinc_users group. All well, except no shortcut to remove in (any) Startup-folder, to prevent manager to start up. Deleting the appropriate key from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run takes care of that problem. Could also have used msconfig (or log in on each user, switch BOINC Manager to advanced view -> Advanced -> Options... -> Uncheck 'Run manager at login?'). Just wondering if it's a bug or by design in this version. 2. Limited users: When starting BOINC Manager (manually or automatically as in 1.) they're not authorized to manage client. Again switching to advanced view -> Advanced -> Select computer -> type 'localhost' and BOINCs password lets the user connect and thus manage the client. Big bug, no? 3. Uh! I forgot what the 3rd thing was! *LOL* maybe I'll remember later ;) |

This is a bug that you best tell the developers about. So, back to pointing out what I write in all the change logs: Please report any problems you get with it to the Alpha email list. This list needs registration. Reporting about it on these forums won't make much sense as the developers do not read these forums. |

Is point 2 a bug? You must be knowing the password for a reason, lest snooping in the gui_rpc_auth.xml may be possible still (?). But of course typing localhost autofills the password, which makes me wonder why 6.6 lost the ability of 6.2.19 to remember the remote host passwords. Ah! No, that works correctly: It doesn't autofill password when typing localhost! And a limited user of course doesn't have access to BOINCdata folder (I checked;), so I guess that's ok :) (I of course knew the password since I changed gui_rpc_auth.xml to my liking) Please report any problems you get with it to the Alpha email list. I absolutely hate email lists... probably the same way "they" hate forums ;) but I'll perhaps give it a try... |
