I have come across a bug which Is verry anoying but easy to fix If you log into a non privelaged account and you have BOINC installed on your computer you may go to the start menu and go START -> BOINC but no matter what you cannot run the BOINC Manager either as a privelaged user or unprivelaged user (using the right click). As a result of this also the screensaver doesn't work when logged on as an unprivelaged user. The whole problem would not exist only that someone at BOINC saw fit to install all BOINC program files in a folder which unprivelaged users are not allowed to even open so that when you click on the BOINC manager link on the start menu you are stopped before you can even get to the program file hence no screensavers for unprivelaged users. I myself will spend as little time as possible in a privelaged account because of the associated security risks. |

How I fixed the problem YOU MUST HAVE ADMINISTRATOR PRIVELAGES TO DO THIS 1 I renamed Program Files/BOINC to Program Files/BOINC2 2 I found found a folder which had the right permissions and copied it from program files/ pasted it back into program files/ 3. I deleted the contents of the copied file 4. I renamed the copied file to "BOINC" 5. I cut and pasted everything form Program Files/BOINC2 to Program Files/BOINC 6. I deleted Program Files/BOINC2 Now all your screensaver software is in a folder that unprivelaged users and unprivelaged processes can access |

It apperars that this doesn't completely solve the problem because \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC is also a restricted directory with some .exe files in it I suspect that the screensaver may be one of those files which is why the screensaver doesn't work work properly. but I altered this much the same way as I have previously described and hopefully it should work But despite changing all this there is still one anoying bug and that is the fact that I still have to manually log into the BOINC manager just to get BOINC running when I am using an unpriveledged account (My usual account). This is a major design flaw because If I forget to initiate the BOINC manager and I walk away from my computer thousands of clock cycles will go to waste! |
