I am running Windows XP, SP2, and have been using SETI Classic for several years with no problem.

Last week I downloaded BOINC and connected to SETI without too much difficulty, and it worked for the most part, although there were some connection outages at SETI.

Recently (within the last few days) the connection to SETI was dropped, and all messages were erased. I have removed and reinstalled BOINC 5.2.13 several times, but all I get is the message:

"BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again? y/n"

So I cannot even get to the tab to try to select a project.

I have tried reinstalling BOINC with my firewall (Kerio) turned off, but that does not make a difference. I have tried reinstalling but deselecting the "Launch at startup box," but that does not make a difference either.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

The problem I believe is not connection to the internet but connection between the BOINC Manager software GUI and the BOINC client software (the actula work) and I now have this problem after a power outage!

I also tried to repair / re-install the software to no avail.

Anybody any suggestions please?

I did refer to the Step by Step Guide as suggested by Jim K.

BOINC installs fine; when in launches, however, it does not run any benchmarks and there are no messages listed. The installation wizard does not request access to the internet for the BOINC programs. I still just get the message stating that the BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client.

I believe I am doing everything as specified in the Step by Step Guide but must be missing something; any suggestions appreciated.

Running Windows XP, SP2.

Actually he was pointing to the link "Look Here" if you click that it takes you to a post discussing this problem and several peoples workaround's.

The problem is that the gui BOINC Manager is just the graphical interface that controls the BOINC program and for some reason the interface program boinmgr.exe is starting up without starting the boinc.exe program.

If you open a dos window and goto your boinc directory then type boinc.exe it starts the actual program and then boinc Manager will connect locally. This is a temporary measure, I have a theory on how to solve the problem but will have to try it later as I am at work and the pc with the problem is at home.

Thanks AndyF1; you were right I needed to read that thread. The problem was that boincmgr.exe was running but boinc.exe was not. When I followed the suggestion in that thread, to replace the random string in gui_rpc_auth.cfg with a blank line and carriage return, and restarted the computer, boinc.exe ran and I am now connected to SETI.

thanks again.
