Hi there. A while back I wrote about accessibility issues for the blind, and I'd like to thank the dev team for their work on the issue. However I've run into a problem, I accidentally changed the view to simple, and I dont know how to change it back, and I have nobody to give sighted help. Is there a way for me to change it back without sighted assistance? If not, I was wondering if there could be an option in the system tray to change views? I think that would work quite well |

Agreed. The 'Simple' view should respond to accelerator keys - Alt-D for consistency with the Advanced menu in Advanced view - or at the very least, allow tabbing between buttons. But the state is persistent (as you have found!). And if it's persistent, it's stored somewhere. And if it's stored, it can be found and changed. I have found the solution for BOINC v5.10 running on Windows XP. If your combination is wildly different, ask again. Here's a little RegEdit script. Save the text between the 'code' tags which follow as a file with the extension .REG, then open it with the default handler. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager] "GUISelection"=dword:00000001 If you have other tools for editing the registry, search for the "BOINC Manager" key, and change the data for "GUISelection" from 2 (simple) to 1 (advanced). BTW, with the v5.10 default 'simple' view, it's probably illegal to distribute BOINC in the UK under the terms of s19 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 |

Comment (strong comment) added to still-open trac ticket [trac]#147[/trac] At least the registry key values are the same in BOINC v6.4.5 |

Comment by Rom Walton: "I'm going to modify the manager so that if somebody hits CTRL-SHIFT-A it'll switch to the advanced view. 6.6 merged the grid view and accessible view, so now there is just one advanced view which should be accessible. The accessibility issue in the simple GUI has been a contentious issue even before its inclusion, unfortunately the verbal agreement we had for an accessible Simple GUI follow-up isn't going to be bearing fruit. We'll just have to continually work on it over the course of several releases." |

Comment by Rom Walton: "I am aware of various pieces of legislation regarding the disabled, as I have a physical disability myself. I've even had to use alternative input devices when I was in the hospital undergoing surgery. However, unless something new hit the books that I am not aware of, section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, only applies to government agencies looking to purchase software. Now, frankly, I would rather look forward than backward, this is where things are at now. The simple GUI has to be re-written to properly handle the accessibility case, until I can get that done the advanced GUI is the best bet." |
