I have two problems with my current BOINC client v5.2.13, the most current client available.

1. My computer start up time has increased significantly. The screen that shows the Windows XP Professional logo with a blue horizontal moving bar under it now stays on my monitor for at least THREE times longer than it used to be.

2. My monitor won't turn off automatically. In my Screen Saver -> Monitor Power panel, I set to have the monitor turned off after 20 minutes. This worked well before. But once I installed BOINC and have a project running, the monitor never turned off by itself. Instead I have the screen saver running 24/7 on my screen, which is not what I want. If I switch back to one of the screen savers that comes with Windows XP, then the problem disappears.

I want to know if these two problems are normal, as in if everybody else is getting the same thing. If so, those who has the contact with the BOINC team please forward the message to them so they can fix the problems in the next release of the client.

xenoverse,

If you have Windows as your OS, I suggest you use Add and Remove Programs to uninstall Boinc without manually deleting anything in your Boinc folder, then re-install Boinc, but on the installer configuration screen, where is has the options to "Start Boinc on logon" and "Make Boinc the default screensaver", uncheck those two option boxes, and go ahead installing to the existing Boinc folder location.

NOTE: This will remove Boinc from the Startup sequence, so you will have to manually start Boinc from the Start/All Programs menu. If having control over when Boinc starts/stops is not a problem for you, this should help with the dual problems you've mentioned.

If you are running another OS, the above may/may not apply.

Regards,

Michael

OK, thanks. I guess there is nothing I can do if I want to have BOINC startup automatically.

However, I do think the screen is a bug instead of a feature of BOINC. Because BOINC screen saver should just act like a normal screen saver without interferring with the shutdown of the monitor.

I hope BOINC team will get this fixed in the next release.
