Message 22046 - Posted: 23 Dec 2008, 23:34:08 UTC

I recently wanted to update from 5.10.45 to 6.2.28 on two machines. I got the downloads, from WCG. On one machine, Vista Business Dell Laptop XPS M1710 Core 2 Duo, I went to Programs, uninstalled BOINC, installed WCG and everything was fine. My projects came up in a few seconds.

On the other machine, Vista Home Premium Dell desktop XPS 410 Core 2 Duo, I went to Programs, did not find BOINC, found nothing to uninstall. So, I installed 6.2.28, figuring that BOINC would see the other installation and remove it. The machine acted as if this was the case. The projects had to come up again, as on the other machine, and in a few seconds BOINC was up and running.

But, and here is the big but, I now have two icons in the systray. If I hover the mouse over each in turn, they give me the same report as to what is running.

If, on the other hand, on one icon I open BOINC Manager and click on Tasks, and then on the other icon I click on Messages, and close out both, then, when I re-open them, each opens on the last clicked tab.

Now, mind you, BOINC is running properly, on WU in each core.

But having two icons is just not right. I went into msconfig|Startup to see if I could find a culprit.

I find two entries for BOINC Client from WCG being
C:\BOINC\boinc manager.exe /s

and

C:\BOINC\boinc manager.exe /a /s

I also find BOINC Client from Space Sciences being
C:\BOINC\boinctray.exe

Now, just unchecking them in Startup, so that they do not appear in the systray is not the issue.

The issues are why did I not see BOINC in programs so that I could uninstall 5.10.45 in the first place, and, what do I need to do to have thing correct?

BTW, my installation of the agent is to C:\BOINC, nothing in Programs, single user and in C:\BOinc, everything shows up properly with the WCG icon.

Any help will be appreciated.

Technically, we don't give help on the World Community Grid version of BOINC, since it's built and maintained by WCG. You'd have to report any irregularities on their forums.

But because it's almost Christmas...
Just uncheck one of the BOINC Manager options starting up. Also make sure nothing starts from Start->Programs->Startup.

As for the previous version of BOINC, are you sure it wasn't a WCG version already? I ask as it's then installed as WCG BOINC, somewhere down there in the Add/Remove Programs list.

Jord-

Thanks, sure, I installed from WCG; but this is a BOINC problem as it is the BOINC agent. I am not asking for help on a WCG project. 6.2.28 is still 6.2.28.

Definitely not a WCG installation of 5.10.45. That would have put a WCG icon in the systray, and I had a BOINC icon.

I am going to check out the rest of your suggestions.

Still, I would like to know, why no BOINC entry in Programs.

Thanks,

but this is a BOINC problem as it is the BOINC agent.

Correction: It's an installer problem. The installer will put all the executables in the correct directory, migrate your data to the Data directory and put the icons in the right place.

And as you can see, it is WCG_BOINC 6.2.28 (hover over the link) .. Berkeley BOINC doesn't go further than 6.2.19, it'll jump to 6.4.5 after that.

Still, I would like to know, why no BOINC entry in Programs.

Difficult to find out, since you already installed the newer version.

I think WCG BOINC makes its own registry entry, so there is a possibility that if you snoop around the registry that you find old remnants of the 5.10.45 version and see if that gives you any clues. You may want to ask about this in the WCG Beta forums, though.

Jord-

Thanks for your excellent suggestions. Looking for a clean slate, I uninstalled 6.2.28. Then, I did the Registry edits first for 5.10. and then for BOINC. Relative to other hunting expeditions this was a breeze.

I then re-installed 6.2.28.

Now, I have just the one WCG icon in the systray, WCG listed in Programs, WU's running, waiting to run, waiting to start, and all is well.

Thanks again.

BTW, since I am technologically challenged, what I try to do to enhance crunching is that I proselytize for BOINC and WCG. Tonight, I believe I got the ex-Commissioner of Health for the State of New Jersey. I carry cards with my name address and telephone, and with the URL's for BOINC and WCG. In the past three weeks I got another four people with I believe six machines ranging from P-IV to Core 2 Duo. Not too shabby.

Hello mitrichr,

just as a follow up: Please see the answer of ageless to my identical question in thread "2 boincmgr.exe processes after upgrade to 6.4.5 ..." (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3425)

Boinc 6.4.5 seemed to change the startup entry for the boinc manager compared with older versions, but do no clean up the old startup entries for all users.
It is easy to fix.

Best regards, Edgar

Thanks, Edgar. I appreciate the reference.

What is so strange to me is that I am running two Vista 32 bit Core 2 Duo machines, they are almost identical and yet I have the problem in one machine and not the other.

As you may have read, I solved my problem with a bit of registry editing. Why BOINC 5.10.45 did not show up in Programs on the one machine so that I could delete it remains a mystery.

Jord, above, points out that I got my download from WCG. I just like the change of icons. It spices up my dull life. Some people feel that with WCG, there is a bit of extra vetting of things, since it is all run by IBM. I certainly do not know about that. Maybe next time around I will go back to the BOINC download and its icon. I know that one cannot tell from the bloc with my signature; but along with all of the BOINC projects, I am on all of the WCG projects on these two machines.

I have two PIII's running projects. They are just on Rice at WCG and a several BOINC projects with relatively short WU's. Those two machines will stay on 5.10.45.

Thanks again.
