My Boinc has been idle due to recent problems with seti@home servers. Thought I'd put it back to work by adding a second project (Rosetta). After registration, I tried to launch Boinc, but it keeps "locking-up" while trying to "connect to local host". I've un-installed and re-downloaded Boinc several times and still have the same problem. There is probably a simple solution - where can I go for help?

Thanks for the reply Stefan. I've started it every way I can think of, to include manually after start-up. It locks-up, won't connect, and won't accept any further commands. I think I'll ignore it for a while and wait for version ".14". Thanks again.

What I am wondering is, when you say that you have started Boinc every way, did you actually uninstall it, re-install, and change the startup option? If you have, then please disregard the following.

What Stefan is referring to is a suggestion I gave him on another thread:

It_is_not_normal to start any application other than AntiVirus, network, or peripheral software at Windows Startup; there are just too many other processes starting up concurrently for everything to run in the proper sequence. All you have to do to prove this to yourself is to open TaskManager after starting Windows, and note the order of the things listed on the "Processes" tab. Usually this sequence will differ at each startup.

Just to humor me, try uninstalling Boinc through the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel, then re-install as Single User, but un-check the "Start Boinc at logon" option on the configuration screen of the installer. This way, when Windows has all it's other processes settled-in, Boinc can be initialized without conflict.

NOTE: You will have to start Boinc from the Start/All Programs menu or from the desktop icon, but I have been doing this for 9 months now, with no instance of a starting problem, and, believe it or not, I DO actually remember to do so."

Yes Michael Boinc is now working very well, i just deleted the autostart registration with a reg editor. Now i start Boinc over the Desktop icon after starting the Computer and there is o more problem. Thanks for your help! :-)

Hello Michael! It took me a few readings to understand what you were saying, but I figured it out and tried it without any luck. I uninstalled Boinc and then downloaded it again. During installation I removed the "start at log-on" option and then opened the program from the START menu.It again locked-up on "connecting to localhost" and I left it like that over night. This morning the screen saver was announcing that the program was still not running and it recommended that I "start up at log-on". Thanks for your help - I really appreciate the time you spent on my problem.I'm pretty tired of it all now, but I've been running seti@home for years and can't give it up. I guess I'll wait for Boinc ".14" and see if that helps. Tom.

OK, now I think we're getting somewhere. I should have asked for any pertinent listing on the "Messages" tab, but my initial post was just to better explain what Stefan was saying. However, you have given me a clue now to go on. "Connecting to host" is referring to internal communication between the Boinc Manager, which is merely the interface (the window with all the tabs and buttons)and the Boinc daemon, which does all the calling, connecting, scheduling, etc. These elements converse over port 1043. First, are you running the Windows firewall, or any 3rd party firewall? If so, you will have to go into the firewall configuration and give both Boinc elements permission for port 1043, and Boinc.exe permission for port 80, which is what it uses for external communication (uploading/downloading, etc). Second, Is there perhaps another program that runs at startup that "grabs" port 1043 before Boinc has a chance? You can get a list of startup processes by typing msconfig into the box displayed from the Start/Run command, and then clicking on the startup tab and noting which boxes are checked.

Please post back withwhatever info you can dig up.

Hello Michael - I'm up and running again!! Yeaaa! The only problem is that I'm only half sure what I did to correct the problem. I tried your recommendations but I was unable to determine which ports my programs were using, so I went to my firewall. I run the Norton Internet Security program and I called up a list of all the programs that were allowed internet access. After a "bunch of exploring" (a technical term), I added the Boinc "command line interface" to the programs that my firewall would allow to access the internet. After a re-boot, I opened Boinc from the "start" menu and it connected to the "localhost" and then Seti. I don't know if the two actions are related, but I'm back in business. Thanks again for your time and patience. I appreciate your service to "The Cause". Tom.

Tom,

I've received much help on several occasions over the years, and many times could not "pay back" the debt to the helper, so I've adopted the "pay it forward" philosophy, where I help the next two or three of however many people who need it. This has the effect of not only continuing the "what goes around, comes around" cycle, but expanding it.
