For the past two weeks, every time I try to open the Bionic manager, I get the message that it is disconnected. Every once in awhile it will try to connect but can't. I was running SETI, but due to the problems I was going to start another project, but cannot get the manager to connect. This has happened every time I restart the computer so just rebooting won't do it. I haven't seen this problem in the posts yet (but haven't looked at every one, I admit!) Any help from the Bionic people would be appreciated. By the way, there is no place on the Bionic site to contact someone for help with the program. That would be helpful as well.

I also have some problem sometimes.
You can try restart BOINC Manager or open a dialog from File/Select Computer... menu item, select empty host name and press OK button.
These works for me.

There are situations where the BOINC Manager will open faster than the BOINC Daemon, in that case, you have to wait for the computer to finish boot up and then reconnect as Nikolay said.

The other problem is that in some cases, it may be possible that the firewall is interfering. I don't have good information on that. so, you are on your own a little bit. But, you may be able to add BOINC as an exception to the Firewall.

Okay! You were both right. I set my firewall and selected the computer and it's connected now! Thanks heaps!

I've tried the methods suggested here, and my boinc manager still will not connect to MY computer. Does having an external modem affect anyting? I have also used the boinc trace program and it said that It was unable to ping "localhost i.e. yourself!" What about older versions of windows? I run WIN98SE, does this mean I am automatically disqualified?

Help! Please and thankyou!

Odd. Perhaps your hosts file has been hosed?
Open a dos box and type 'ping 127.0.0.1' (no quotes). Does that work? If so, find and fix your hosts file and/or type '127.0.0.1' (no quotes) into the 'Select Computer -> Host name' field.

IIRC, there are some quirks with Win 9x boxes, mostly regarding shutdowns and reboots requiring user intervention, but otherwise you should be good to go.

Neil – I’ve had SETI@Home up and running on a Windows 98 (Service Pak 2), 200MHz system (a long three days per unit) for the past month without any problems.
