Eric Myers has a nice walk through with sample apps.

[edit]Although I'm not sure which version of vc++ he's using. I've only used his Linux notes.[/edit]

Then using the Windows counterpart will probably be the better way to go.

(Recently, few months ago, BOINC dev team dropped support for compiling the client/Manager/etc. with Visual Studio 2003. But IIRC it should be still possible to compile the applications with it.)
