Hello!
I am quite excited about donating my pc's time to these worthy causes - however.
I have a question regarding the system resources the projects use while i am using my computer.
Essentially I have set bionic to only start working on projects after 60 minutes of inactivity, but why do the projects still use large ammounts of memory (as much as explorer.exe) while they are supposed inactive? I would expect the process to start only after the time i set, but they start with windows.
I do not want my pcs resources used up when i am doing other things, am I going to loose the work the project have done if I end these processes? And is there a way to stop this from happening?

Thanks for your time :)

Find and set the "Leave applications in memory while suspended?" option in your computing preferences and disable it. That way when you use the computer BOINC will unload the project applications from memory.

Do know that if an application doesn't checkpoint (save intermittent recovery points), that tasks done by this app will restart from zero percent.

Many Thanks for your prompt reply Jord

Unfortunatly that had no affect - "Leave applications in memory while suspended" was already disabled. I have found also that neither the cpu usage controls in either the BOINC program or the seti preferences have any affect on CPU usage. I think the same for memory as well, as it is also set to use "0% of memory when computer is in use" but this is not the case.

I assume this is not as intended, and I am sorry if i seem picky. But basically I really don't want anything else running on my computer while i am working on it. at present cpu use is either all or none, while memory use is the same all the time 35mb for seti and 100 for the climate model - and killing the processes manually results in loosing the work done by the projects...

I am at a loss, but do still want to help these causes :(

Thanks again -
i was about to message and say that I already had this option checked (and I did) - I switched between "Run based on preferences" and "run always" again, restarted BOINC, and that seems to have sorted it!

Good work guys, I salute you :)

Hi Dagorath.
I was aware of Xps task priority system. Though I did not realise that BOINC was running low priority, I had noticed that while running and apparently using up 100% CPU my computer would respond much better than I expected it to - and not grinding to a stop.
I do have it running as I want now, it wasn't so much processor usage i was concerned about as this would drop to 0% when i was using the computer anyway, more the memory usage while the projects were supposedly inactive - it just bugged me, and I pretty much use up all of my pcs resources when I am active on it myself, so try to keep background services to a minimum.

Thanks again for your help :)

joe
