i make my pc work for seti and use boinc ofc.
some time ago my pc crashed and i had to install boinc again.
Now its running in deamon ? wtf is that then and i cant get rid of boinc if i turn it of it still keeps running bah realy %##$@! anoying.
does someone realy think thats a good idea?
its a realy good reason to stop with boinc and so not help seti anymore.
it slows down my pc and even when i pause boinc it keeps more then 650 mb of data in memory grr

so how to get rid of this deamon crap i just want boinc to run when i push the button?

btw i think its a realy bad thing it will scare of new users for sure people dont like programs running without having a say in it.

Read Service install = Protected Application Execution mode please. It'll explain all about it.

By the way, it's called a service on Windows. It's a daemon (not deamon) on Linux and there you'll to follow additional steps to install it as a daemon.

If you do not want BOINC to install as a service, you'll need to uninstall it and reinstall it, then in the installer, under the Advanced button, you'll need to take the check off of the Protected Application Execution option.

Then BOINC installs in the old single/multi user mode.

Sure, you can set any service to start manually. When you disable the service, it won't run at all.

For those who want the security benefits that go along with starting BOINC as a Windows service but just don't want the service to start when Windows boots:
1) Click Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, the Services window opens
[...]
There, all the wonderful security benefits of running BOINC as a service but the service won't autostart when you boot Windows.

Nice compilation!

To complete it: the BOINC service can now be started either by

  • starting BOINC Manager (it will notice that BOINC is configured as a service, but not running, and will immediately launch it), or
  • running "net start boinc" from a command line (this can be also configured as a handy shortcut), or
  • from the "services.msc" applet or any other GUI capable of launching services.

But don't be surprised, that stopping the BOINC Manager leaves the client running! It can be stopped either by

  • "Advanced / Shut down connected client" menu entry in the BOINC Manager, or
  • running "net stop boinc" from a command line (this can be also configured as a handy shortcut), or
  • from the "services.msc" applet or any other GUI capable of stopping services.

A friendly fairy (or elf) whispered in my ear (typed me an email) that a next version of BOINC (and WCG BOINC) will have a new shutdown procedure. When you select File->Exit in BOINC Manager, you get the choice to leave the science apps running, or also shut them down (effectively shutting down the service), plus an option to remember this for the next time...
