When boinc is running [rosetta], I get constant internet activity.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it didn't block IE for 20-30 seconds every 10-20 minutes.

I would prefer it wouldn't do this.

Is this normal?

I am also experiencing constant internet activity, which used not to be the case. I only noticed it the last couple of days. I have Windows Vista, and BOINC 6.2.14, and am running the SETI@Home and Einstein@Home projects.

In normal BOINC operation, the 2 projects are using 100% of my CPU which is normal... setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe and einstein_S5R4_6.04_windows_intelx86_1.exe. They have always done so, but without using internet activity except to infrequently request/post work.

If I set the BOINC manager into "snooze" mode the above 2 applications disappear from memory and CPU usage goes down to negligible amounts, BUT internet activity continues... I am seeing large amounts of data going into and out of my computer via my ZoneAlarm tray icon. However I don't see any processes in Task Manager that could be doing this.

boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe show up in Task Manager but they are using zero percent of the CPU.

When I exit BOINC, the internet activity stops.

Please tell me how I can identify and fix this problem... otherwise I will have to give up using BOINC.

...my ZoneAlarm tray icon...

Zone Alarm also shows internal traffic. So what you're seeing is the communication between the core client (boinc.exe) and the manager (boincmgr.exe). It's completely harmless. It never leaves your computer. I believe there's a setting somewhere in Zone Alarm that will make the constant flashing stop.

further notes... no actual internet activity is seen in Network and Sharing, yet ZoneAlarm (which shows traffic via the tray icon) is constantly flashing! So, BOINC is generating traffic to/from some port which does not show up under my internet connection statistics. Any idea what the heck is going on?

You were just TOLD what's going on.
BOINC is in 2 parts; the hidden worker (daemon) part, and the visble (gui) part, which allows you to see what the worker is doing. These 2 communicate via a port on your computer, and ZoneAlarm shows this activity. But it's a case of "out one ear and in the other". Nothing to do with the internet.

Apparently there was a recent update to ZoneAlarm, which has cased problems for people running climate models, as it wiped them. The new version has deleted/ignored the old "trusted programs" settings, which is probably what has happened to you as well.

I am using Panda Virus and firewall protection... and both the boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are always communicating (except when exited completely) over the Local TCP 3146 (boinc) and remote TCP 3146 127.0.0.1 (boincmgr.exe.

Even when I put them in Snooze this activity continues. I know it will not harm anything, but if I need to use the CPU for my activities ... I have to exit the entire thing to get the CPU back. Boinc is not using it for calculations, but because of all this activity, my PANDA CPU usage and page swapping is not at its lowest. And unlike the other product you mentioned, I cannot have Panda ignore it, or do anyhting to it - except block it all together (which I know is not a good thing).

I wish BOINC would allow me to adjust this communication level when in Snooze, like down to once every 1-5 min or so.
