Now that BOINC installs as a service a question came to my mind.

When you install a program in most cases the install program will tell you to exit all programs before installing.

Simce BOINC is now a service do we have to stop it or does Windows take care of services during installing a program?

Isn't it in order to minimize the chance of a need to replace any resource (file, ...), locked by a running program, thus causing Windows to plan a reboot afterwards?

Hopefully not. Not for majority of applications.

Probably not alone. Possibly an installer would have to check its dependencies and stop conflicting service itself.

I've never stopped BOINC to install another program on Windows and have never had any problem from it. Most science apps that run under BOINC checkpoint (save their progress) regularly anyway.

I've ignored that message from the installers for as long as I can remember. If they can't deal with a running program, they usually pop up and error message.

/me is glad she rarely deals with Windows anymore
