I'm one of those people migrating from Classic SETI to BOINC. So I've done what's been indicated on the BOINC site--downloaded the manager, everything, and even signed up for a couple of other projects, too.

But clearly, something's wrong. I attached successfully to SETI, but I'm now in the middle of downloading a work unit (presumably, though I'm not sure) and it's going NOWHERE. Not moving an inch. And on the Projects tab, it says my status is "Scheduler Request Pending." It says this for Einstein and LCH (and when I attached to them, it said I'd failed, but when I tried attaching again, it said I was already attached!).

I can't sort out what I'm doing wrong, and I've read through various forums. I checked my firewall (ZoneAlarm) and made BOINC a trusted app. I've checked server statuses, and they all are green.

This is really frustrating, and all it does is make me want to chuck the whole thing, and I really don't want to do that.

Can anyone suggest a page on a site (I've been through BOINC-wiki), or heck, suggest any resource I can use to solve this problem? If I'm not giving enough detail for some real answers, let me know what you need to know and I'll be happy to provide it.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

SETI isn't actually working for me either right now, though it has before. I kinda assumed it was a temporary problem with the server.

You might have just picked a bad time to install BOINC. (Though just moving myself from Classic, I wonder if there's a *good* time to install BOINC :)

Ok, it may take awhile... :)

But, SETI@Home has problems right now. LHC@Home is out of work. So, that leaves us with Einstein@Home...

Einstein@Home has a 10 M work unit data file that needs to be downloaded. If you look in the Wiki's Application Owner's Manual there is a brief description of the various tabs. To monitor progress of uploads and downloads you need to look at the transfers tab. For most projects on DSL/Cable it is very frustrating as the stuff is so small it goes by before I can even see it well. As you indicate you are on dial-up you are lucky enough that you will be able to see the transfers ... :)

If you are attached you should see the project listed in the Projects tab.

Just for testing purposes, if Einstein@Home is too large of a download, you might want to try Predictor@Home for a little bit.

Oh, and there may be general Internet problems to add to our woes ...

Okay--this was quite helpful (I'm sad LHC has no work, btu hey, it just means we're all very efficient). However, I *am* actually on DSL.

All the Transfers (and I'm working from memory, as I'm posting from work at the moment) are SETI-related; nothing's come through for Einstein. However, I do want to try Predictor anyway, just to get some work started. When I'm home tonight I'll review your post again to see if I've missed something, or if there are other relevant questions I can ask.

In the meantime, thank you for your prompt and thorough reply!

And Bleh to the Internet problems...I was wondering if that might have been an issue, and now I know it can be.

Again, thanks!

Yes, people tend to forget the infrasturcture we are all dependent on. When two of the carriers got into a snit we had no end of trouble.

Again, thanks!

No problems. :)

If you are on DSL then Einstein@Home is a good choice.

For others you can look in the Wiki for the list. It seems to change on a daily basis.

If you are into the pain, there are also a longer list of Alpha/Beta test projects that you can sign up for though the work there is even more sporatic than LHC@Home ... :)

If you would like to give Einstein a spin, take a look at this thread first and then wander around the whole "Getting started" message board. If you need any help getting the EAH project running, please ask any questions you like there. There are a number of helpful people there who would love to give you some assistance.

If you already have EAH attached, come on over to "Getting started" and post a message there. In your BOINC Manager, select the EAH project and hit the "update" button on the projects tab. Then go to the messages tab and copy and paste the messages from BOINC Manager into your message on the boards.

I'm sure we'll be able to sort out whatever is troubling you.

Cheers,
Gary.

I'm sure we'll be able to sort out whatever is troubling you.

The same goes for any project. To point out the obvious to everyone else, newcomers often come here when they would be much better off on the project BOINC message boards.

This is for several reasons:

1. Other people can see some details of your account and computers (unless you hide them). That often makes it much easier to offer advice (for example you cannot use Win98/ME with climateprediction, so people can diagnose that problem immediately).

2. Some problems and solutions are project specific.

3. There tend to be more people around able to help.

You may also find the answer to your problem already, saving you the trouble of posting.
