I had a situation that so far has occurred only once. When my screen went into screensaver mode, I immediately hit the Ctrl key. This usually brings the screen back, but this time the screen stayed black, and would not restore. No response to the mouse or the keyboard, other than the main windows menu using the windows button. Fortunately I had Task Manager loaded at the time, and it was visible when I toggled between apps, so I was able to kill BOINC.

... I immediately hit the Ctrl key ...

The Ctrl key actually has special meaning to the BOINC Screen saver.
Holding it down invokes a feature that allows you to interact with the screensaver. Kinda odd I know, but the graphics are so cool that people asked if they could interact with them in screensaver mode.

You can read a little more about it here BOINC Screen Saver

When the screensaver appears, try holding down the control key, right-click the mouse and move it around. Now left-click and move the mouse.... ;-)

Kind Regards

Chris – Gave your aforementioned quote/posting a try with E@H implementing version 4.45 on the following system:

    CPU Type ='s Genuine Intel - Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz

Operating System ='s Microsoft Windows XP, Professional Edition, Service Pack 2

The “Screen Saver” would not zoom or behave in a manner as I think you were describing within your posting. However, calling up the BOINC Client and viewing the graphics under the “work” tab, I was able to rotate and zoom the constellations without a problem.

I’m not sure if this is a characteristic of the E@H - Screen Saver or perhaps a minor overlooked bug.

Thanks for Your Time,
Tom

Tom,
Each project implements the screensaver code specific to their requirements, however it looks like the Ctrl key functionality is part of the BOINC framework.

From my own experience, pressing the ctrl key:
E@H - One press = blank for a few secs, then reverts to screensaver, two presses, or holding down Ctrl for a couple of seconds = desktop.
P@H - No screensaver graphics.
CPDN - One press = desktop.
S@H - One press = nothing, holding down ctrl, left click and move = rotate etc.
LHC@H - No work, can't tell atm. ;-)

Chris – First, to offer my apologies; I believe you to be absolutely correct in your posting, to my self infected embarrassment in my posting, I had two windows open on the screen, and felt I was responding to Len’s posting in the window I had opened for the E@H forum, not the BOINC forum, so yes, I concur that each project’s Screen Saver operates differently depressing the “Ctrl” key.

However, on my version 4.45 - E@H project (OS =’s Windows XP), depressing the “Ctrl” key has no affect on my monitor’s display at all. This could be problem with my computer or a relationship to which version of E@H a user is implementing, not sure.

E@H - One press = blank for a few secs, then reverts to screensaver, two presses, or holding down Ctrl for a couple of seconds = desktop.

Regardless, again, my apologies for both an incomplete posting and misleading posting.

Take Care,
Tom

LOL. No harm done. I leave multi-tasking to the computers.... :)
