I've run SETI since 2000 and switched to BOINC Rev 4.x with only a few problems that seemed to be corrected. Much later I upgrade BOINC to 5.2.5. Almost immediately it opens a dialog bubble telling me that I must connect to the Internet so that it can get some sort of service (I have a DSL connection that is on line 100% of the time). I have Boinc running continuously as I did SETI, but it still interrupts my work with these unwanted commands! It seems to be uploading and downloading files with no trouble (or need from me). What's up? I'd be happy to offer unused cpu and clocktime for a good cause, but why do I need to be continuously interrupted by Boinc reminding me that I need to be connected (I am already!)? |

Almost immediately it opens a dialog bubble telling me that I must connect to the Internet so that it can get some sort of service Next time this occurs, can you copy the exact text from the dialog? This shouldn't be happening, but I can't even guess what it is from what you've described. |

Try the latest BOINC version 5.2.10: # Changes since 5.2.9 * Win: Fixes a BOINC Manager connection issue when the manager is waiting on a firewall for the all clear. This generally happens after a reboot. # Changes since 5.2.8 * Win: Fixes the 'connection failed' message when another program is using the BOINC communication port. And thank you for your patience so far. |

Well, think of something else! I went ahead and upgraded to v5.2.10, then to v5.2.12. Twelve hours later the bubble message re-appeared ordering me to "...open the BOINC Manager to connect up and perform the needed work". Any other ideas??? Perhaps another problem? Ever since using BOINC, I see something like the following messages occasionally: ******************** 11/26/2005 8:22:29 PM|LHC@home|Result wjun4nmC_v6s4hhpac_mqx-nm__4__64.298_59.308__4_6__6__75_1_sixvf_boinc62236_2 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 11/26/2005 8:22:29 PM|LHC@home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 11/26/2005 8:22:29 PM|Einstein@Home|Result w1_1211.5__1211.6_0.1_T06_S4hD_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 11/26/2005 8:22:29 PM|Einstein@Home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 11/26/2005 8:22:29 PM||request_reschedule_cpus: process exited 11/26/2005 8:22:30 PM|Einstein@Home|Restarting result w1_1211.5__1211.6_0.1_T06_S4hD_1 using einstein version 479 11/26/2005 8:22:46 PM|climateprediction.net|Result 3vdd_200202438_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 11/26/2005 8:22:46 PM|climateprediction.net|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 11/26/2005 8:22:46 PM|SETI@home|Result 17ja04aa.23556.8448.515914.161_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 11/26/2005 8:22:46 PM|SETI@home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. 11/26/2005 8:22:46 PM||request_reschedule_cpus: process exited 11/26/2005 8:22:55 PM|rosetta@home|Result 1ogw__abrelax_rand_len10_jit02_omega_sim_26569_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file 11/26/2005 8:22:55 PM|rosetta@home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. ******************** Early on I stopped "resetting the project" and ignoring them (suggested by the SETI folks), as it appears that the processing continues on it's merry way, finishes and uploads the results anyway. Perhaps another problem? Ever since using BOINC, I see something like the following messages occasionally: wjun4nmC_v6s4hhpac_mqx-nm__4__64.298_59.308__4_6__6__75_1_sixvf_boinc62236_2 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file Ron, Check out the Unofficial BOINC Wiki, an ever-evolving wealth of information. In the Google searchbox, type in "exited with zero status" (including quotes), and the first hit will explain what is known about it. I've had the mesage on nearly every Einstein WU (over 1000 or them), sometimes multiple instances during a WU, with never an effect upon either the work or my computer. I asked about it on the Einstein messageboards one day when I was bored, and was informed that it was the result of a well-known flaw in BOINC and could safely be ignored, and was directed to the BOINC Wiki, as I've done for you here. To the best of my knowledge, there has not been an instance where this error was to blame for any damage, certainly none that I've heard of, and I've been working the Einstein help boards for several months. I hope this is of help to you. Michael "The arc of history is long, but it bends toward Justice" |

"BOINC Manager - Network Status Has anyone else ever seen this??? I've never heard of this dialog, on _any_ of the BOINC project boards I've been on... |

"BOINC Manager - Network Status Bill, Yes, I've seen it often since moving to 5.2.x on my Win rig. Hasn't seemed to indicate any risk, as all WUs have completed, completion time right in the pocket. On WinXP, it shows up in a bubble emanating from the System Tray icon, as do all the doggone "...needs a connection..." whenever it uploads another result, nagging uselessly, as it manages to connect through my 24/7 cable connection without any assistance on my part. If I remember correctly, that particular message to which you refer indicates download of another datafile. Michael "The arc of history is long, but it bends toward Justice" |

"BOINC Manager - Network Status It apears from time to time. It seems it has to do with the automatic connection type detection. It is to fix by setting the connection type to network (LAN) in the BOINC Manger Optiondialog. Greetings from Bremen/Germany Jens Seidler Webmaster http://www.boinc.de/ |

Thanks! I'll try setting the option to using a LAN connection. I would ignore the anomaly if the message remained buried in the bowels of the application, but it's been an extreme distraction from time to time when it pops up unexpectedly while running a PowerPoint presentation to a group. |
