I was wondering if anyone had the current count on how many PS3 are signed up to run BOINC or it's application? |

196 hosts with a cell broadband engine for a CPU, 227 hosts on the PS3grid project. I am a bit surprised, I expected more. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

I thought i read 40,000 in three days? so only 227 PS3 Cell processor are active? You may be getting confused with Folding@Home, which has 250,000 PS3s total. |

Have quarter of a million members of the public signed their PS3s up to Folding@Home? Seriously? |

Have quarter of a million members of the public signed their PS3s up to Folding@Home? Seriously? "As of April 23, 2007, more than 250,000 PS3 owners have allowed the Folding@home software to be run on their systems, averaging over 400 teraflops and peaking at over 700." -- Wikipedia |

That's an amazing number. It's over 20% of the number of people who've ever signed up to BOINC. It's a pity that X-Boxes can't be used in the same way. They cost as much as many computers. |

Have quarter of a million members of the public signed their PS3s up to Folding@Home? Seriously? But of those 250,000, how many are still doing it? My brother (a true geek) signed up and ran it for about an hour or so and decided it made the machine way too hot. I don't blame him. It's an expensive toy. Kathryn :o) |

I just got a PS3...how do I install/run/configure Boinc? I see there is an option for Folding@home but that is a different DC project (I believe). Also, what is the likelihood that I will burn out the machine leaving it on 24x7 running Boinc? I'm happy to have it participate, but I'm not willing to blow it up in 2 months. :) -Eric |

I just got a PS3...how do I install/run/configure Boinc? I see there is an option for Folding@home but that is a different DC project (I believe). Very cool! But 2 main problems for me (even though I am very technical): 1)No wifi support yet...my PS3 is nowhere near a wired connection 2)The install instructions are not very complete. Things like "shut down linux" are meaningless to me because I am doing this on a PS3 with the Sony game controller...not a keyboard or mouse! There are other examples where if the creators of this nifty project would take a few hours and put explicit, step-by-step instructions with screenshots, I would sign up in a jiffy...and so would thousands of other PS3 owners. But again, I'm not about to risk nuking my machine because of a bare-boned-installation instructions resulting in a failed install or incorrect boot attempt or something like that. :) |

Your BIG problem will be finding a project that has an app for the Ps3. If you're thinking about Folding@Home, then they will probably have LOTS of info on setting it up. |

Your BIG problem will be finding a project that has an app for the Ps3. Hmmm...I thought that once BOINC was installed on ANY given architecture, ALL Boinc PROJECTS were, by default, supported. No? If not, then what is the point of Boinc being a "platform"? I know each project has it's own binary executable...but I thought there was some handshaking going on between Boinc and the Project from a development point of view. -Eric |

Hmmm...I thought that once BOINC was installed on ANY given architecture, ALL Boinc PROJECTS were, by default, supported. No? No. Many projects can't release apps for some platforms because they don't have such machine. PS3 is even worse: the whole app probably need rewriting to take advantage of the quite-different CPU architecture. Otherwise, you'd get performance lower than a normal PC. |

"As of April 23, 2007, more than 250,000 PS3 owners have allowed the Folding@home software to be run on their systems, averaging over 400 teraflops and peaking at over 700." -- Wikipedia According to Folding@Home - Client statistics by OS it is now 32 238 active PS3's out of total 402 742 attached PS3's. (Active PS3's are defined by F@H as those which have returned WUs within 5 days.) BTW, PS3's were said to be "pretty fast" (their WUs should take approx. 8 hours) and so they've got "pretty tight" deadlines - 2 days. With this WU length, a bit too tight for my taste. Peter |

I am doing this on a PS3 with the Sony game controller...not a keyboard or mouse! Well... If you read the instructions on the PS3GRID site how to install Yellow Dog Linux on the PS3, you will see in the chapter called "WHAT DO YOU NEED BEFORE STARTING" that a USB keyboard is essential to install Linux on your PS3... ;) |

I have had mine crunching 24/7 for about half a year now, with no problems. About cooling, no additional cooling needed. Just don't put it in an enclosed cabinet with the doors shut. Reno, NV Team: SETI.USA |

Your BIG problem will be finding a project that has an app for the Ps3. PS3 Grid, SETI and yoyo has a PS3 appliction which uses the SPEs of the PS3. SIMAP and Einstein an PPE only application. The SPE applications uses the full potential of the PS3. The PPE applications ran only at the "control CPU" of the PS3 and is as fast as a G4 Mac. |

A week ago Eric Korpela wrote: We are looking for a volunteer to port SETI@home to the Playstation 3/Cell Broadband Engine architecture. Current PS3 ports exists, but to our knowledge all run on using only the PowerPC portions of the Cell processor rather than on the SPEs. Is he just not aware of the mentioned SPE port? Peter |
