Ok after a while I decided to put my grain of sand by doing some crunching again. I installed latest linux with GUI 5.10.28 on ubuntu Fesisty.

The problem:

Installs fine and runs fine, only thing is that when I close it, it won't stop, keeps running in background, I already tried in menu File>Exit and File>Close Window, nothing still runs, how do I fix this? For now I open a shell and do "killall boinc" and that works.....

I'm talking about Linux not windows, thx anyway.

BTW the command I use to kill it is "killall boincmgr" not "killall boinc"

Ok yes, that does work, sorry, I thought you were only referring to windows Boinc.

But then how do I do so just closing it stops it? It was easier in earlier versions where just closing would stop, it's a bit too much of steps doing it that way and can become a "forgetful" step to do when logging out of my account.

If you uninstall the BOINC "service" install first and re-install as single user, exiting BOINCmgr should exit the core client as well and in case of logging out of a session, exit it also. Presume it is a shared computer where you want to end BOINC when done?

There isn't anything like the Windows installer for Linux.

Joe, how did you install BOINC initially? Did you get it out of the repositories or downloaded the .sh from Berkeley? If you downloaded from Berkeley, how did you install it? Is it in a directory in your home folder (or some other place in your user account) or did you do a daemon type install where BOINC has its own user?

I can't promise I'll be of much help, but I'll give it a shot.

There is no such thing as "service" or "single user mode" on the Linux version of BOINC.

Both are wrong, you shouldn't be killing the process forcefully. Close the manager first, then use boinc_cmd --quit. Or use the option to shutdown client on the advanced menu on the manager; it does the same as that boinc_cmd line.

I downloaded the latest .sh from Boinc. then ran it in my home dir so it created the BOINC folder, added a shortcut to desktop pointing to run_manager

Yes it is a family shared PC where I want it to stop when loggin off my account

I guess I'll just have to remember to go to advanced and stop it there.

In former versions, when I closed the BOINC GUI, the boinc tasks also quit. SInce this version, the tasks continue occupying the CPU. Why was this changed? At least there could be some configuration check box how a user would like to behave when the BOINC gui is closed.

Are you looking at the GUI with the tabs or the newer simple GUI? I can assure that in the tabbed one (the Advanced GUI) there is an advanced drop down menu.



Other than that I'm really no use because I've never followed the directions that come with the .sh from Berkeley. I've always installed it as a system daemon that runs out of its own user account or more recently as an rpm.

Don't use close from dropdown-menu from Boinc-Manager-Window. Then you will only close the window from Boinc-Manager (it's same like you push the X from Boinc-Manger in MS-Windows) but Boinc will always be running in the background.
To verify close the window from boincmgr and restart boincmgr. You will see in log that no start-message with boinc-version will be displayed.

Nope, it doesn't. I always quit BOINC manager with "Datei > Beenden". And former versions (before 5.10.28) always stopped the tasks too. I see this in my CPU meter. Since 5.10.28, the CPU meter keeps crawling at 100% and I see the BOINC tasks still working in the process overview (GNOME system monitor).

I am able to stop the client via

Extras > Shut down connected client

but of course this is a step backwards compared to former versions that did this automatically on closing BOINC manager ...

Hmm, sounds not good. I had also 5.10.28 installed and i was not really realizing that i could have the same shutdown-problem. I had also some other os-troubles and updated past a few days to Augustines 5.10.30 for 64bit-Linux.
So far no troubles with anything, i have also not seen any breaking WU's if network-access is down.

today i had the same problem with version 5.10.30. my solution was simple >boinc_cmd --quit<
