Hi,

Here at the BIFI we have planned to develop, in short deadline (15th
December), a couple ways for OpenSocial to support BOINC. In this way
BOINC websites could include OpenSocial gadgets, and some modules in
the websites could be portable to the Google Toolbar in Vista, and
perhaps to iGoogle. Not only thinking on "GOINC on steroids", but
more: for instance, a communication chat gadget for friends in a
social network would automatigically work between the components of a
team.

Our preliminary vision is that the group an user is in can be
interpreted as the set of friend of this user, and that the recent
work done can be interpreted as recent activity of the user, form the
OpenSocial point of view. Still, I'd like to hear other ideas.

If you are planning to use OpenSocial in some way related to BOINC,
please contact us to share information and effort.

Oh great. Another attempt to make BOINC a social networking product.

Actually, an attempt to short cut development in the webpages, because during the process you get modularity in iGoogle way.

Still, I am intrigued about your remark "Another". I will confess we have thought hard about the networking side because we are interested on building local community (having physical, not virtual, meetings). Do you have examples of social networking attempts under BOINC servers?

Do you have examples of social networking attempts under BOINC servers?

- outsourcing the mailing lists to Google
- expanding the team functionalities with loss of privacy
- inventing a mailing system without prior consent of the users
- tailoring the search functions to make spamming of teamless crunchers easier

A "buddy list" was planned like last year, although it never materialized in code.

Should it be welcome? I mean, the "buddies" in your BOINC system are your team partners, are there?

Not really, not alone, and especially not as an integral part of a mainly scientific project.

My buddies can come from different teams.
I can be on not-my-buddy terms with members of my team in a big one.
Social networking is a nice add-on for BOINC, but no integral part and certainly not the centre.

That's only half correct.

In small teams all or at least most team members will usually be "buddies".

In a team with nearly 20k members, that's sure a bit too much.

And beeing buddies does not require to be in the same team.

Example : There are competitions ("Gauntlets") between different teams that result in "remote friendships" between individuals from the competing teams.

So the idea of a buddy list is not too far fetched.

If anything I would have prepared a pipe, but that's some 3 years over now as well ;)

The Cafe' in every project. Total waste of database space and bandwidth.

Hi Pooter

If you mean that the project forum cafes are a waste of server space, I cannot agree. On my main project, various teams use a forum thread each for socialising, helping each other with minor technical problems, and encouraging and congratulating each other when they succeed with the massive tasks. If the DC hobby can also provide a bit of fun and relaxation, all the better. A forum with only deadly-serious scientific and technical threads would discourage many newbies. And oldies.

Hola Alejandro

When Zivis first started I couldn't find its boinc forum. I hope you have one now. All your members/crunchers who want to can create their own profile using the existing boinc facility. They can talk to each other on the forum. The scientists and developers can talk to the crunchers on the forum. Members can send each other private messages if they want. You can announce project news and meetings/conferences in Zaragoza or elsewhere on the project's website index page and copy it to a news thread in the forum. This can all be done using existing boinc facilities. You can ask the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza to announce your meetings and conferences too. If you are going to have meetings in other cities, you can ask the ayuntamientos there to announce your meetings too.

If you open and publicize other Iberzivis meeting places eg OpenSocial, you will probably reduce the number of visits to your website and forum, diluting their effectiveness. I would say the best strategy is to encourage your crunchers to visit your website and forum, not send them away somewhere else.

If you announce a project open day at the university and publicize it well, you will probably find it is very popular. When CPDN had an open day in Oxford, Dr Anderson came to England and gave the first talk. Extracts of the conference were recorded and linked from the project website.
