Hi, A team mate of mine has the following problem: Boinc is installed on a Win XP machine in "share-user" mode. When he starts BOINC (clicking on the desktop icon), the manager is started but boinc.exe is not started: boinc.exe doesn't appear in the task-manager. So the manager just freezes and he has to kill the manager app in the task manager. To make boinc work, he starts boinc.exe with a command-line (in Windows !!) and then he starts the boincmanager, and it's working. Any idea ? (he tried to install/uninstall BOINC at least 15 times to no avail) |

I would guess a permissions or firewall problem. Firewall problem seems more likely since I would expect the manager not to run if it was a permission problem. boinc.exe needs internet access on ports 43 and 80, local access on ports 1043 and 31416. boincmgr.exe needs local access on ports 1043 and 31416. Well, thanks for replying. But how do you explain that boinc.exe is not started (no boinc.exe in task manager)? That's the whole point. This user have to start Boinc.exe in command-line, or else there is no boinc.exe running. We've already checked port problem (ping on 127.0.0.1, firewall, etc) but it doesn't seem to be the source of the problem: when started in command-line, everything works fine. |

If the ports the manager needs to communicate with boinc.exe are not available it can prevent the manager from starting the deamon. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |
