I just installed BOINC 5.2.7 several hours ago 'cause SETI@Home said they're going to shut down classic server very soon... Installation was smooth... Attached to SETI@Home and Einstein@Home successfully, start working easily... But then I found that for Einstein@Home when the screensaver supposed to come out, my screen turn black displaying nothing... That's acceptable, "black screen" is a kind of screensaver anyway... The worst thing is, when SETI@Home is runing, the fancy 3D screensaver was on the screen working properly at the beginning, but after a few seconds, the CPU time clock slow down badly, runing about 0.05 second per second... I doublechecked in the BOINC Manager, and find the CPU time there grows with the same rate about 0.05 second per second during the screensaver was running... Does it means that my computer does almost nothing during the time screensaver running? Or it's only a display bug? Or my old computer (Laptop Celeron 1.33G) is too slow to handle these fancy screensavers? Thanks... |

Turn off the screen saver and if your computer speeds up the answer is yes.... BOINC Wiki |

Or my old computer (Laptop Celeron 1.33G) is too slow to handle these fancy screensavers? The screensavers use any graphics card processing that is available, and typically affect the speed of the application by 10% or less. However, if your graphics processing "shares" memory and processing power with the main CPU (which is likely on a low-end laptop) then it is possible that the graphics will take much more of the time away from the app. |

Or my old computer (Laptop Celeron 1.33G) is too slow to handle these fancy screensavers? You can even set how much of processor time could be consumed by graphical computing. There is project specific setting in your account setting, at least for Seti@home. You can find "Maximum CPU % for graphics (0 ... 100)" there. If you reduce this setting, you will get less frames per second, but more power for crunching. Also other parameters can affect cpu load. Text style, Graph style and Maximum frames per second. I played with these parameters long time ago, so maybe something has changed. And to see these parameters maybe you have to set "Graphics preferences" to "Custom". |
