I'm sorry, I'm quite the newbie to boinc. I've been using it about 6 hours now. I noticed a "Select Computer" option in the manager. I assume it works on other folks computers/networks. So why not mine? I have to machines plugged into the same switch sitting next to each other. No firewalls or security between them. One of them is windoze 2000, and the other XP. The manager says give me a host name and a password. So using an IP address or host name doesn’t matter I would figure, and I tried both. However it keeps saying connection failed.

So I guess my real question is, where do I set the password? I tried the project account password and that doesn’t help. I tried the local administrator password and that didn’t work either.

I’m sorry I’m such a n00b. But the http://boinc.berkeley.edu/manager.php didn't prove very fruitful. Showed a pic of it working, but didn't even explain how to go about it.

I noticed a "Select Computer" option in the manager.

Several issues here - to remotely control another computer, that computer has to have a "remote hosts" file installed on it first. (Telling it what IP addresses are allowed to control it.) The password for your local computer is in an xml file "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" and is initially set to a random string of letters and numbers. You can change that by editing the file if you need to, even to a blank line if you want, just make sure to leave in the trailing carriage-return/line-feed. However, unless you _are_ doing remote control, in which case you'll need it to get back to your _local_ machine, there should be no need to change it, or care about it.

I would suggest looking in the WIKI here for how to set up the necessary remote files. Many people have it working, but I'm not going to be much help personally as I only have one Windows box, rest are Mac, and I haven't managed to make it work cross-platform yet...
