I recently upgraded to a pentium 4 computer and downloaded boinc. The problem is that there are now two einstein programs running simultaneously. The good news is that I am blazing through work units twice as fast as before with my other machine; the bad news is that the fan is going to drive me crazy at night and I wonder now if the processor will not overheat running two einsteins simultaneously. is this normal for a P4, and how do I correct the problem? is this normal for a P4, and how do I correct the problem? If your P4 has Hyperthreading, which means it can do "two things at one time", then this is normal. You can however turn it off by going to the General preferences under "Your Account" on Einstein and setting "On multiprocessors, use at most" to 1 instead of 2 processors, then hitting "Update" for Einstein in BOINC Manager. HT doesn't actually work "twice as fast", but does give you somewhere between a 3 and 10% boost. Turning it off will actually cause individual results to crunch even faster, although you'll only be doing one at a time, so the total throughput will be a bit less. Still, if it means keeping the fan quiet while still working, I'd turn it off. |
