I just upgraded to 5.8.16 on Suse Linux 10.2. The BOINC manager is unable to find my browser, whereas 5.4 had no problem. I have the BROWSER environment variable set, and entering `echo $BROWSER` at the command line starts the browser. I posted this as a question on the forum, but got no response. Investigating further, I downloaded the source and built 5.11.0, using WxWidgets 2.8.4. This version runs and finds the browser just fine (it's finding the browser using the GNOME configuration setting). So there's a problem somewhere - is it perhaps in WxWidgets? |

Well...... anything is possible. I don't know who is working on the Linux end of things right now. But I'll send an email to David and Rom. Kathryn :o) |

This was fixed in, if I am not mistaken, 5.10.11 .. but since we only have 5.10.8 in Linux, the fix hasn't reached us yet. ;-) So yes, build your own BOINC version. By the way, if you edit version.h you can set your own version number before you compile. That way you don't walk around with a 5.11.0 all the time. ;-) |

5.10.8? The download page only offered me 5.8.16. Anyway, I'm quite happy to use my 5.11.0 manager with the 5.8.16 client. Speaking of version.h, I had one compile error on my first build attempt. In AdvancedFrame.cpp, the include for version.h was bracketed with "#ifdef _WXMSW_". Since this in not defined in a Linux build, the version string was undefined. When I commented out the ifdef/endif, the build was successful. |

The latest Linux build is 5.10.8. But Windows and Mac are up to 5.10.17. So the fix was in the changeset for 5.10.11. But us Linux users don't get it until Berkeley does a build for us or we build it ourselves. Kathryn :o) |

Hi, When I started this thread back in August, it was indicated that this problem was fixed in version 5.10.11. I have just installed 5.10.21, and the problem is still there, so I have again reverted to my self-built 5.11.0. Is there further information on when this will be fixed? Thanks, Ned |

See if it's not something along these lines: http://en.opensuse.org/Xlib.lock .. others have reported the behaviour that BM doesn't start from the command line. What's in the URL helps. |

Hi Ned / Ageless, No it has nothing to do with Xlib.lock It was not possible and also in 5.10.21 still not possible. If you try to view your account through the BOINC manager, it complains: "BOINC Manger tried to display the web page of http:/... but couldn't find a browser. Assign your standard browser by adding the path to it and restart the BOINC Manager" Sorry it's a quick translation from Dutch. I don't know where I have to put that path - there's no link to for example the preference tab, so I just left it. If you install KBoincSpy, this feature runs out of the box. Berend |

Hi, We're still barking up wrong trees here. As I said in my initial post back in August, setting the BROWSER variable doesn't work, at least not on OpenSUSE 10.2 with Gnome. My feeling is that it is a bug in the WxWidgets version, as this feature stopped working when BOINC manager was changed to use the browser loading routing from WxWidgets. The 2.8.4 I used to build the manager allows it to work (though it has other problems, like a gazillion failed assertions on startup). |

Think you're right Ned, Tried everything you said and followed Jord's link and got the same outcome (I'm running KDE). Unfortunately I'm not that deep into WxWidgets. Berend |

Well, FWIW, it works fine with 5.10.21 on Fedora 7/KDE/Firefox. I can't offer any other details because I really don't know what's relevant or how to find it. Kathryn :o) |
