Is there a way in which the user can determine the maximum length the projects they receive can be?

For exmple: only allow 1000hr (or less) climateprediction models to be sent to their computer?

This way, massive projects won't be given to users who have either slow computers, or who have computers that are turned on only part of the day.

All CPDN models are (currently) the same length, and the deadline is ignored. In any case, since they upload the climate data as they go, they can be aborted once you've done as much as you're willing to do (perferably at 1961, 2001, or 2041, since that's when the most detailed uploads happen).

There are many users who have slow PCs but still run CPDN - it just takes a while :-)

There aren't "short" climateprediction models. The one you got is the only choice. If you have a slow computer, or have computers that are turned on only part of the day, don't attach to climateprediction. There are other projects to choose from.

Later in 2007 it's possible that shorter cpdn workunits may be made available, though I'd guess that the shortest will probably be 40 model years compared with the current 160. If this happens, it will be announced in the News section here.

Rosetta lets you customize the amount of time you spend running a workunit. You can choose from 1, 2, 3 (default), 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 or 24 hour run times. They'll finish within +/- 10 minutes or so of your preferred run time, but must complete at least one model.

As far as I know, Rosetta's the only project that has that feature.
