5.9.3

Please start with the existing web-based settings in the BOINC Manager preferences under the advanced tab.

Sorry for moving your post to its own thread, but 5.9.3 isn't a release version.

It's an ALPHA test. Any problems within it should be solved at the end of the test.

As for the 'problem' you have, did you go through all of the tabs? As all the tabs, left to right will go through all of the options for me.

I'm asking that they start with the options filled out from the web-based settings, instead of arbitrary settings. That way you can see what your existing preferences are and whether or not you want to change just for this computer.

I didn't realize this forum was only for released versions. I thought it was the devel forum.

Anyway, when you moved the message, I thought I was not logged in properly or something and the message had disappeared.....so I did another. Feel free to delete it.

Please calculate the resource share of the projects by the number of projects that are not suspended, rather than by the total number of projects.

Thank you.

Off topic.... Very regularly get a message, that there are not enough connections available to the forum.... "try later" it says. Still suffering from disappearing slashes, or slashes being inserted where there arren't. Had to go back in after the first edit, to put them in again.

I reported that already, but hey, it's a holiday. I wouldn't expect this to be fixed any time soon. Maybe someone is DDoS'ing Berkeley again. Else it's back to the database problems they had earlier.

Could someone explain the "additional work buffer" setting? I tried it, with a small number, and it tried to download "04/12/2007 05:37:30 PM|PrimeGrid|Requesting 3732422046 seconds of new work
". That was for a 0.25 value I had put in. Work buffer was set at 0.01.

Is this how it's supposed to work? That's something like 49,000 days of work it tried to download.

5.9.3 is an Alpha version and as such we're trying to get bugs out of it. What you found is a bug. Which is already reported on the Alpha email list.

Only run the Alpha versions if you feel you can lose work.
The 5.9 strain going to 5.10 has a lot of changes in it. All of them need to be tested. If you don't want to do so, please stay at the stable 5.8 branch for now.

I'm putting the new 5.9.3 on my machines. All are WinXP, SP2. I like the new look, esp. the reappearance of the progress bars for each WU.

I've been able to crash it twice so far on two different machines by playing around with the UI (adjusting column widths, etc). The symptom: you get an hourglass when mousing over the manager, and it is unresponsive. You can kill it with task manager, and you get the "send to Microsoft" message box. The individual project tasks remain running, and seem to be unharmed. If you restart the manager, it reconnects like nothing ever happened.

That's been reported to the list, although I'm not sure the sent to microsoft pop up was.

Look in stderrdae.txt in the BOINC directory and see if there's a debugging dump. It's start with something like "engaging BOINC runtime debugger". If it's there, email it to me through this page.

I looked at stderrdae.txt, but it was last modified on 1/19/07. Tomorrow I will look on my work machines to see if I can find a relevant one where it hung. When it happens again, I can try to copy out the info it wants to send to MS.

With 5.9.3 Boinc:

I have my connect time set at 0.5 days but I can't get more than ~6 hours of work downloaded (time according to the "to completion" column). The WUs do complete in approximately the time in the "to completion" column so it's not a problem with estimated time.

Take a look at the posts on the scheduler changes.

What project and what is the deadline?

[quote]With 5.9.3 Boinc:

I had already read that (some days ago) and I don't think that's what's happening.

Running:
no cc_config file installed
Seti Main only running - I don't mean other projects don't have the same problem, they do.
Always connected to internet DSL
Turnaround time 0.37 days
87% time Boinc running
99.6% work allowed
~0:45..1:20 WU runtime
2 weeks plus WU deadlines
Seti set at 25% resource share - should not be important when Seti Main is only project active.
I do have 3 other projects on "communication deferred" - no active WUs.

Actually I'm now getting only 3..6 hours of work - closer to 3. Possibly because of the other semi-active projects. If those projects do not send me any WUs then they should not be included in the WU time allocation. In the older Boinc versions I could get at least 0.5 days for each project - maybe that has changed so that I can only get 0.5 days total. In any case if I can't get WUs downloaded for a project I should be able to fill the cache for whatever the currently active project is (as measured by currently downloaded WUs).

What about stdoutdae.txt? Any debug thing there?

I figured out what the problem was with not downloading sufficient work (my post #9765 and #9768). Somehow I got a global preferences override file installed. I think this happened when I was playing with the simple interface and I did the "customize this computer" option. So then I had an override file with a 0.1 days connect time and no matter what I told the servers the override file was being used. I edited the override file to 0.5 and now Boinc is running as I expected. I guess next I'll just delete the override file so I don't get confused again.

Make sure you use the Clear button in the Advanced Preferences dialog, else it gets repaired when you restart BOINC.

@ Bob Guy,
You can actually see in the message log in the advanced view, that always first the general_prefs from thewebsite are loaded and in thesecond step, the local overrides applied.

Yes, that's exactly how I found the problem, the log said "Reading override", only I had no idea that I had installed an override file.

And, I can't find any "Clear" button to press.

In the simple view (the one without the tabs), there's a "Preferences" button. If you made any changes there, that would have created that override file.
