For background to this problem see this post: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1588 Basically, i dont think i am the only use having comms problems with BOINC, especially at work/university where you might have access to a very powerful machine but that cannot or should not connect to the internet. So, having a version of BOINC that would install and run from 'Powerful PC' but then remove the complete work units, using removable media/USB drive/iPod etc., connect that device to 'Internet PC' to upload the data? What are peoples views? |

First off... Run BOINC only on authorized computers As to an off-line version... No. That would defy the name, even. Or Berkeley must release a BOIC. ;-) Now if it were only one computer at work you'd be utilizing, you'd be able to install a separate version of BOINC on your home computer (useing the /a option, for instance), download work with that, copy the whole directory onto a USB stick, bring it to work, copy the directory onto that computer, run the work, when done copy the whole directory onto the USB stick, bring home, copy the directory to the home computer and upload. But as you see from that, it's a hassle. |

Thanks - what does the /a switch do to the install procedure? This unpacks the BOINC package without using the full installer. The Installer will start up and ask you where you want to unpack to. The start place it gives will be a very strange one (it always starts on L: on my system ;)). Just browse to or type in a new destination and folder. Then it will unpack everything to that folder. So when you navigate to that folder in Windows, you'll see two more folders and a BOINC.msi file. The two folders are Program Files and Windows. In the Windows folder you'll find the Boinc.scr screen saver file. In the Program Files folder, there's a subfolder called BOINC, which contains everything BOINC. No need to install. It'll run from there. Use boinc_5.8.16_windows_intelx86.exe /a from a command line to start it. The above is an example, of course, and must be started from the folder where you saved the Boinc installer file. |
