I repeatedly receive the following message: Processing suspended because processing usage is high. I seldom use this computer so it has nothing to do with me using another program while BOINC is active. I suspect it is overheating and then just shuts down. I have set the processing values on BOINC to 10% but it happens multiple times every day. It is also set to use those listed preferences. I am using BOINC version 8.2.11 (x64) wxWidgets version 3.3.1 I am using Windows 10. I have used Print Screen to copy my system info but it won't paste here. I then pasted it into a Word Document but I can't figure out how to get it into this dialog box from there either. I also don't see a way to attach my Word document. I also tried Control/Shift/E to obtain 100 lines of code, but that doesn't work either. Any ideas would be appreciated. ID: 119703 · Reply Quote

It involves [ img ] link to where the screenshot is hosted [ /img ] (without the spaces); direct adding to a post isn't supported. As for changing the setting to 10%, there's two settings. To post an image here, it has to be hosted on another web site. eg Imgur, Flickr, Dropbox, Postimages etc. I also tried Control/Shift/E to obtain 100 lines of code, but that doesn't work either. In the Event log, select the lines to copy, then select "Copy selected" down the bottom of the log (or CTL + C), then select where to paste them in the message box and then CTL + V to paste them there. Any ideas would be appreciated. Set When to suspend to Never (make sure all the option boxes are unselected, Suspend when is left blank for both "mouse/keyboard use" and "non-BOINC CPU usage" should be left blank (---)), Set Usage limits to 100% for both CPUs and CPU time. Save the changes. Click on Update on your BOINC Manager to get those changes. They are settings left over from when CPUs were single core/single threaded. With multi core/multi thread CPUs, unless you are transcoding video or running local LLMs on your system, there is no need for them to be enabled. Grant Darwin NT. ID: 119707 · Reply Quote

Is it worth cleaning the main heat sink and re-seating the CPU with new thermal grease ? If, as you suspect, the cpu is overheating, and it will if using all CPU, it might help. I have some really old machines running boinc, one a 2008 Dell Pentium 4 from the days of Windows XP. From the original post Processing suspended because processing usage is high. Which is a result of system activity and how BOINC is configured to operate. Overheating will result in reduced clock speeds on current systems. On much older systems random crashing, system lockups or re-booting are the usual signs of the CPU overheating in which case cleaning up the existing heatsink paste & re-applying new past will be the way to go (assuming the issue isn't due to the CPU fan running slowly or the heatsink being full of crud). My previous instructions were incomplete- In the BOINC Manager, Options, Computing preferences, click on "Use web preferences", when the "Discard local preferences and use web-based preferences" comes up, click on Yes. That will set it back to the web based preferences, but you need to make sure they are set correctly as well. You're also using Science United which makes things more difficult than they need to be- in this case i suspect you need to make the changes to your web based computing preferences through your Science United account. Usage limits Use at most 100 % of the CPUs Use at most 100 % of CPU time When to suspend Suspend when computer is on battery Suspend when computer is in use Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use 'In use' means mouse/keyboard input in last 3 minutes Suspend when no mouse/keyboard input in last --- minutes Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage is above --- % Compute only between --- If you feel the need for a cache, set the cache size in the "Store at least" value. It's best to leave the "Additional days" as 0.01. The larger that value is, the lower the cache will get below that value before it will refill. Other Store at least 0.50 days of work Store up to an additional 0.01 days of work I would suggest setting "Store at least 0.50 days of work" to 0.1 for now to give things a chance to settle down once the new values take effect (probably a week or so, depending on how many hours per day the computer is on). After a few weeks, if you feel the need, you can increase it again. As you're running an old laptop, if these settings cause issues with heat, change the "Use at most 100 % of the CPUs" to 50% and see how it goes. After clicking on Computing preferences, I get the Use web preferences choice, but I get a hot link that takes me to the Science United web site. I am not seeing the Discard local preferences choice. Also, I picked the Science United web site at random. If there is an easier one, I'm all for it. In addition, the Computing Preferences dialog box is shortened from the example in Help. BOINC Manager, View, Advanced View. Selecting Options, Computing preferences will now make everything available. Changing them there and click on Save will take effect immediately. Selecting "Use web prefs" may work as described, if not maybe someone familiar with the Science United account manager can explain how to get it to work. For me, using an account manager makes things more difficult- it choses what projects to do, not you. The work you do earns Credit to show what you have done, but with an account manager it accumulates against the manager, not you. When not using an account manager, you enter the project you want to do in to the BOINC account manager, setup an account with that project and attach to it. You can then change your computing preferences on their web site- both for the project and for BOINC itself. You can add or remove projects as you like, or just enable and disable doing work for each project. And you can change the Computation settings for BOINC on any project, and they will be updated on all your projects when BOINC makes contact with the project that you made the changes on. If you've only got one computer, it's not much of an advantage if any. Buit if you've got 2 or 3 or 50+, it's very useful. Grant Darwin NT. ID: 119771 · Reply Quote
