I have used both versions and both have to be re-installed often because they lose their permissions or can not connect to a computer (localhost). This is really frustrating, besides my daily average goes down. What is happening? |

Thank you for the pointer. However, this is consistently having trouble. Either the permissions problem or the unable to connect to the localhost. I tried the ip 127.0.0.1 but it still did not connect. It then flashed the permissions error. I re-installed and now it is running. Mac OS X Intel Core 2 duo, 2 gb ram, 72 gb disk space left. Any other info needed? |

Have you read Boincer's reply to my request? It may be a problem with the install script. I have asked Charlie to take a further look at it. |

I am not getting (Error Code -1010). Netinfo Manager does show boinc_master and boinc_project So, I will look for a version before the security changes until it is fixed. |

No, I was referring to his answer here. Ah, Interesting. I tried it. Hopefully, it worked as both scripts ran without error. |

I have used both versions and both have to be re-installed often because they lose their permissions or can not connect to a computer (localhost). What exactly does the error message say when they lose their permissions? Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

I have used both versions and both have to be re-installed often because they lose their permissions or can not connect to a computer (localhost). BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC. (Error code -1202) However, when it does not connect to the computer neither localhost nor 127.0.0.1, I do not get an error code, just a message that it can not connect, to go Advanced > Select Computer where I can either type in localhost or 127.0.0.1 which then loops me through the process over and over. That message comes up faster (less persistant) with 127.0.0.1 than with localhost. |

[What exactly does the error message say when they lose their permissions? -1202 indicates that a project file has been written with the wrong user / owner. Which projects are you running? Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

Ah, Interesting. I tried it. Hopefully, it worked as both scripts ran without error. Apparently, right after runing the script, BOINC started running w/o a problem. I had not restarted my computer since running the scripts. I normally don't restart it on the weekend. But to check, I just restarted and it started right up and connected to the localhost. I will watch it all next week. |

Ah, Interesting. I tried it. Hopefully, it worked as both scripts ran without error. I guess one has to run the script after shutdown. I took my laptop to Kinko's today and BOINC would not run so just re-ran the scripts as before and it works now. Pain. |

That should not be necessary. I'm assuming you're using the BOINC Installer (with BOINC Manager) as opposed to the bare client; is that correct? Although this is a workaround rather than a real solution, you might find it easier to run this script. Just look at the script with TextEdit; it has directions for running it. Please let me know if this doesn't work for your problem. You might also try the just-released version 5.8.15, though I doubt it will make a difference. Meanwhile, I'll keep thinking about what we can do to diagnose the reason for your problem. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

I am using the BOINC installer (boinc_5.8.11_macOSX_universal). So yes, that is correct. I followed the instructions with sudo and running the script as per previously noted. I have d/l the Mac_SA_Secure script and will try that. Not scheduled for shutdown until tomorrow AM so will not know until then. This is a dumb question and I think I know the answer but can I examine the permissions on a specific directory to see what is wrong. For example /volume/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/ currently is owned by boinc_master w/group boinc_master and others read only but I have read and write. If this is normal? I get the error or it will not restart, would checking this and/or making it apply to all enclosed items make any difference? Or is this over my head? (I am short, 5' 6") <g> |

(I am short, 5' 6") The installer adds all users with administrative privileges (i.e., all users who are members of group admin) to also be members of groups boinc_master and boinc_project. This permits admin users to easily access BOINC's data. That's why you have read/write access. Since you understand how to check owners, groups and permissions, it would be great if you could check these the next time you have a problem. Please look at these values for the slots directory, projects directory and all their contents; then compare them to the desired values shown here. Please let me know which files or directories have the wrong ownership or permissions. Error -1202 usually indicates that some of the contents of either the slots directory or the projects directory have the wrong user or owner. You can find an explanation of the octal permission codes here; scroll down to the section titled "Modes". You can also find more information on the security permission settings here if that helps. Thanks in advance for your assisitance in tracking this down. Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |

Projects, slots, 0, 1 folders all 664 (I.e., Read/Write, Read/Write, Read using command-i and using monitor ls -al, I believe that I saw the same thing but that was 14 hours ago. ) However, switcher is read only, read only, no access. I took screen shots of all the items above (if you would need them.) |

Projects, slots, 0, 1 folders all 664 (I.e., Read/Write, Read/Write, Read using command-i and using monitor ls -al, I believe that I saw the same thing but that was 14 hours ago. Can you tell me the permissions of the files inside the 0 and 1 directories, and also for the files inside the projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ directory? I also need to know the user and group for each directory and file. The simplest thing is to type the following in the Terminal application (the quotation marks are important): cd "/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/slots/" ls -alR cd "/Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/" ls -alR Then copy the results from the Terminal window into a message and post it here. (The Terminal application is at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.) Thanks! Charlie Fenton BOINC / SETI@home Macintosh & Windows Programmer |
