Just installed BOINC 7.2.4 on my Win10 system.

Avast One Basic took exception to boinc.scr, classifying it as a threat, type IDP.generic.
Added it to the exceptions list.

Other than that false positive, no issues upgrading from my existing version.

The one thing i did notice- running the installer to upgrade the existing installation took only a few seconds, until it gets to the "Upgrading permissions for the BOINC Data folder..." that takes about a minute or so, then you finally get to the Installer wizard completed screen & Finish button.

Under the Installing Docker for Windows instructions, i'd add one more step/check.

I followed the instructions as written. On one system, i was able to Right click and Open the boinc-buda-runner.wsl file and it installed no problem.
On the other i kept getting an error- on that system 'Virtual Machine Platform' wasn't selected.

So i'd suggest adding it to the list
click in the Windows search bar (lower left corner)
click 'Control Panel'
click 'Programs and Features'
click 'Turn Windows features on or off'
check the box for 'Virtual Machine Platform' if not already selected
check the box for 'Windows Subsystem for Linux'
click OK
Restart the computer

After installing version 8.24 I still see the "Another instance of BOINC Manager is running" popup with a new checkbox "Don't show this dialog again?". Checking the box and clicking OK still displays the dialog on the next invocation of BOINC Manager. I am initiating the Manager from a shortcut on my Win 11 taskbar.

A possible issue- the only Project i'm running at the moment is Numberfields@home.
Since upgrading the Manager, the initial Remaining (estimated) times aren't changing as work is returned & new Tasks downloaded, even though actual processing times are always varying.
GPU times would generally move around by 30 sec or so, CPU times by 10 minutes or more.

I changed from processing 3 GPU Tasks at once (4min 30sec to 15 min), to doing only one (2min 15sec to 9 min).
The cache has been cleared out, new Tasks have been downloaded, but the initial Remaining (estimated) time is unchanged from 8:17 sec.

The APR (Average Processing Rate) for my RTX 4070 Super (doing 1 Task) is still less than that of my RTX 4070 Ti Super (doing 2 Tasks).
Is this value determined by the manager, or by the project server?
(Looking at the computer in question, the APR value is 66.48. As each Task is returned, refreshing that page gives an updated value, which is only varying by 0.15 GFLOPS or so).

I've reset it back to 3 at a time for now to keep it's production up.

I seem to have that problem with WCG tasks on 8.3.0
Currently no tasks available but I have been running ARP tasks for months and estimated times are still over double actual run times.

Edit: If confirmed when WCG tasks start appearing again, I will flag it at git-hub. (Assuming it isn't already there. I haven't checked yet.)

So with this new Docker / Podman thing... if I have Virtualbox installed, do I uninstall it and install Docker / Podman?

Certainly not until all the projects you run have changed over or started offering it as an alternative.

24 hours later, and the Remaining (estimated) CPU & GPU times on both systems are unchanged.
I'll concede it's possible for that time to move up & down over a day & and end up back where it was, but for 4 different times?
And the fact that significantly changing the runtimes had no effect on the Remaining (estimated) time over several hours indicates something somewhere isn't working.

I agree. The estimated time should after only four or five rounds of tasks being requested and then returned be very close to actual run time. Somewhere there is a post by Richard which gives information on how the iteration works. I will wait till I am getting work again so I can either raise the issue at git-hub or comment on it if the issue is open already with fresh data.

BoincTasks wont connect to 8.2.4 for some reason.
Even though I set up gui_rpc_password, and try to connect to localhost with BoincTasks with the correct password.
Anyone else experience this?

BoincManager connects just fine to localhost, and service status shows boinc-client running.

There was another thread on this. If I can find it I will post the link. Something was changed in the security protocol of BOINC and BoincTasks hasn't caught up. Or that is my understanding at least. A quick search doesn't reveal the thread but it was started by a user who is banned so wondering if it has gone?

Not sure how relevant it is but here is the link on the CPDN site. Having gone through the thread I don't think it is a change in the BOINC protocols.

Thanks Dave.
I had that guy on my ignore list. I did skim through the thread.
Maybe there will be a solution in time.
Until then I can make do with an older version of Boinc or just use BoincManager.

I updated to BOINC 8.2.4 a few days ago and then tried to install Docker on my Windows 11 Laptop. It took me a while, but I finally realized that the instructions on the Installing Docker on Windows page are incorrect with regard to the statement that Windows 11 has WSL already enabled. I did enable WSL on Windows 11 by mimicking the instructions for Windows 10, however, i have not been able to go any further installing Docker. I have run the 2.4.13/wsl.2.4.13.0.x64.msi multiple times - it seems to run but there were no messages to confirm its installation or failure and when i go to the next steps involving BOINC/boinc-buda-runner-wsl there are error messages indicating that 2.4.13/wsl.2.4.13.0.x64.msi was not installed. Makes me wonder if there are other Windows features in addition to WSL which need to be enabled for this process to work. Another thought is: Do the items downloaded need to be in a specific folder to work? Currently they all reside in my Downloads folder.

As i posted earlier in the thread- 'Virtual Machine Platform' must also be enabled.
Once done and rebooted- then you follow the instructions exactly as posted, and it will install.

Once WSL is enabled, install the latest version: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases/download/2.4.13/wsl.2.4.13.0.x64.msi

BOINC provides a WSL 'image' that contains Docker. Download it from https://github.com/BOINC/boinc-buda-runner-wsl and open it.
Make sure you open it before doing the next step.

Open a terminal window (type 'cmd' in the Windows search box). In this window, type

wsl -d boinc-buda-runner

I did that with the downloaded files still in the download folder with no issues (once 'Virtual Machine Platform' had also been enabled along with WSL).

Thank you!!! I have Docker up and running now. The process was easy after getting Windows 11 set-up like it should be. Hopefully, someone will edit the Installing Docker on Windows page appropriately. And I will try to do a better job of reading the message boards before posting.

For Win 11: just updated "BOINC client version has changed from 8.0.2 to 8.2.4" and note the Read-me says 8.2.5 is available but does not seem to be....

In the installation instructions for Docker: "Note: Docker and VirtualBox are incompatible on Windows. If you're using VirtualBox for something other than BOINC, do not install Docker."

So, are any BOINC processes using Docker yet, if so which?

Are any Vbox processes still being produced, if so which?

IOW, when to switch?

Thanks

If you are running VB applications now, don't switch. If you aren't then might as well do it now so your system is ready to go when applications are released for projects you are doing/want to do.
