Something very strange is happening in Boinc 5.8.8 under Win XP... I have the CPU throttled down to 50% (although it does it at any amount less than full CPU), and when the screen saver and graphics come up, they blink. That is, the screen saver appears for about a second, then the windows task bar appears, and then the Boinc graphics come back, rinse, and repeat. This wouldn't be so much of a problem, except that it prevents the monitor from automatically sleeping like it normally does. Again, if I set CPU to 100%, the problem goes away, but I don't want to do that... Anyone know what's going on?

When you are throttling the CPU through BOINC, what it does is pause the crunching, then continue the crunching. When a result is paused it won't show the graphics/screen saver. So when you're using the throttling, don't use the screen saver.

Most preempted results can still show graphics (I mean on most projects). The suspending/resuming for throttling should only stop the computation thread.

Should maybe, but it doesn't. I'd say, test it out on your system, Nicolas. I just did. Put preferences to run 50% CPU, updated prefs, made my screen saver run BOINC, sat back and waited the minute. And true to form, the Einstein screen saver started, flashed off, started, flashed off, each second. ;)

I'll ask the devs if they want this behaviour.

OK, I am testing new versions of BOINC 5.8.10 at the moment to see if this is fixed. According to the devs they got it cracked, I am waiting for the latest version with all the fixes in to test if it's really fixed.

Check this space. ;)

Ah, ok - good to know they have that quick of a turn-around on new problems!

@eteg, Please test if BOINC 5.8.11 is still doing it on your system. It's working correct on mine.

Yep that did it - if only commercial companies would patch their products so fast... thanks!
