Message 8317 - Posted: 20 Feb 2007, 12:47:41 UTC - in response to Message 8314.

I'm pleased to tell you that, in response to your concerns, we have found a way to eliminate the need for the AppStats helper application starting with BOINC version 5.8.15. You should now be able to drag-install the bare client and its associated applications without needing to set any permissions or ownership, as long as you run the bare BOINC client with the -insecure option.

There is no longer the need to run anything as root.

Excellent news!

I'll test 5.8.15 ASAP.

While I'm at it, I wrote a patch for 5.4.11 that I sent to the Debian BTS (dunno if it's been forwarded to you yet), which aims at supporting more platforms with respect to CPU information. I've noticed you changed the kind of information that is provided with 5.8, but you might nonetheless find it useful (and I might upgrade it too at some point).

It can be found here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=406853 (last version at the end)

Tested, as far as I can tell it's working smoothly with the -insecure switch.

Excellent work, thanks!

I've got problem again with installation new version of BOINC manager...

In instalation Windows appear message:

"The future you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'BOINC.msi' in the box below."

Then I put "C:\\BOINC\\BOINC.msi" into it, and press OK new window appear:

"The file 'C:\\BOINC\\BOINC.msi' is not a valid installation package for the product BOINC. Trz to find the installation package 'BOINC.msi' in a folder from which you can install BOINC."

Why is my old 'BOINC.msi' (ver.: 5.4.11) invalid with new 5.8.11 version of BOINC? Can you help me with upgrade my BOINC manager without loose projects data? Thank you, VIKtor

I was running BOINC Manager 5.4.9 without problems on my Mac Book Pro and OS 10.4.6. I tried installing BOINC Manager 5.8.11. It seemed to install correctly but I kept getting messages that it could not find the client. I tried re-starting the computer, reinstalling BOINC Manager 5.8.11, and selecting "localhost" as my computer. None of that helped. I'm not sure what to try next. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

I updated to the BOINC 5.8.11 last week from a 4.19 version.
It seemed to be working fully up until I finished work on Friday.
I've come in this morning and all my 'active' projects have finished,
but none have uploaded, I have the following for each...

26/02/2007 07:49:46|Einstein@Home|Scheduler request failed: a timeout was reached
26/02/2007 07:54:54|SETI@home|Scheduler request failed: a timeout was reached
26/02/2007 08:05:12|rosetta@home|Scheduler request failed: a timeout was reached

What's going on?

Hi,

What are the differences between 5.8.11 and 5.8.15?

-Cheers,

Mike

(PS I really wish that the release notes would cover the minor version changes too).

What are the differences between 5.8.11 and 5.8.15?

All differences are written in the change logs (12-Feb-2007 to 19-Feb-2007).

That's a very useful link, thank you. Any chance of persuading someone to add it to the bottom of boinc.berkeley.edu/rev_history.php?

Actually, one nitpick: since I updated to 5.8.15, seems boinc is reporting (to eg BoincStats BAM) that my hostname is 'localhost' instead of the real hostname of the machine. 5.4.9 didn't have this problem.

I got struck with the -1010 problem on some other Mac (PPC one). Tested 5.8.15 and 5.8.16, both affected. FWIW, it's impossible to reinstall 5.4.9 after that, 5.4.9 installer says "there's nothing to do". Another remark: please provide an "Uninstall" option, especially if you create a new user on the system.

Here's the full log from 5.8.16, HTH:

hey ho.

The Problem with Error -1010 is simple. The script calls PostInstall but the filename is Postinstall ... someone see the difference?
If you try to install Boincmanager at OSX-Server with standard formated HFSX+ (case sensitive, you know "a" isn't "A") volumes the script search for a file with the name PostInstall, but the real filename is Postinstall ("I" isn't "i").

A just in time workaround is:
Open the package "BOINC Installer" (ctrl + click -> show package),
navigate to "Contents/Resources/BOINC.pkg",
open package BOINC.pkg, navigate to "Contents/Resources/Postinstall.app" ,
rename "Postinstall.app" to "PostInstall.app" (note: the Postinstall.app size is around 600k,
don't rename the small 4k file with name "postinstall"),
then open the renamed package/application "PostInstall.app" and navigate to "Contents/MacOS/Postinstall" and rename the file "Postinstall" in "PostInstall"

After this modification the script can find the files, of course you can rewrite the script too.

I hope someone can the developer inform, so wich he can correct this error.
With best regards to operation-blindly :-) developer

5.4.11 did a nice job of keeping the queue full, and downloaded as many workunits as it would take to finish in the days you select between network accesses. My queue is set to 5.5 days.

5.8.8 gets about 10 workunits and winds down to nothing before getting more workunits, even if only running one project.

On one machine, I reinstalled 5.4.11, and the queue filled up again.

5.8.11 does the same thing as 5.8.8.

5.8.15 does the same thing as 5.8.8.

Have a close look and see if 5.4.11 returns any work after the deadline.

There have been drastic changes in the CPU scheduler code in the 5.8.x core client. The logic is much different than in the previous releases.

Here are two threads (one and two).

The second one includes an explanation from JM7 who is largely responsible for the scheduler code.

This is spot-on. It looks like the installer wasn't tested with a clean machine, or wasn't being run on a case-sensitive partition. Fix the typo and everything works great.

Hi Jord,

Thank you very much for forwarding this. I will fix it in the next release.
