Hello, started running BOINC last week. On my slower AMD computer, runs great. On my 3.2 GHz Intel machine, though, programs started slowing down until I rebooted; today when I run BOINC, it says "Buffer overrun detected! Program: C/\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boinc.exe A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated." I click "OK", then BOINC Manager gives me a "BOINC Manager - Connection Failed" window that says "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?" and when I click "Yes" it tries, then fails again. When I click on "Attach to Project" it says "BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC clinet. Please use the 'File\\Select Computer...' menu option to connect up to a BOINC clinet. To connect up to your local computer please use 'localhost' as the host name"

I use localhost, it automatically gives me a long password, I press <enter> and still nothing. I run 3 different antivirus/spy sweeper programs (Norton, Spy Sweeper, Spybot), got rid of a couple of cookies, re-installed BOINC, same story. I uninstall BOINC, re-install BOINC, same story. I'm obviously connected to the internet (how else am I able to post this question?).

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

Two ideas for fixing this problem (on a different thread):

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1417&nowrap=true#7338

yoyo:
So it seems that big std*.txt files are the root cause for this BOINC bug. The next time I will be asked to help for this problem I will suggest first to remove these files.

yoyo

Go into c:\\program files\\boinc, (or c:\\program files\\climate change experiment) and see if there are some large text files, with names such as stderrout.txt, stderrdao.txt, etc. These are log files which note down stuff of interest. Close down boinc, rename the files to something else, and then try restarting it.

KSMarksPsych:
Just got a response from Dr. A about this.

This problem is in the version of BOINC that we made for BBC,
which is pretty old.
I'll bet the problem disappears if they use 5.8.

Version 5.8.5 is available from the download site: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php. It's important to note that it's a beta test version which means that it may contain bugs. If installing over the BBC version, it is very important to install into it's original location (c:\\program files\\climate change experiment)

If either of these works (or for that matter, they don't work), can you keep us informed? This is still very much an unknown bug.

Version 5.8.5 was made to help track a particular bug, and there are uncountable things working bad on it. It's definitely a bad idea to recommend it to new users. BOINC 5.8.3 is quite stable.

But there's only one version at a time of 5.8 on the download_all page, so I'm stuck with recommending whatever's there.

In fact it's now 5.8.6a ... is that a good or bad build?

5.8.6a is a rebuild of 5.8.6 which had a big bug. So now we're actually testing 6a. Can't say yet if it's a good or bad build. Come Monday we'll get another one to test. But at least we're nearing the end of the test run for 5.8 before it goes public. :)

5.8.6a is not running into the old problem from 5.8.6 so its definitively better ;)

And just don't play around with Advanced, shutdown connected computer, as it doesn't matter if you fill in anything, press the cancel button or press the X, if you run as a Windows service on your computer, playing with this option will kill the service. Rom knows and is adding a confirmation screen. ;-)

All the versions are still there in the download directory. It's just that only the most recent version is linked. You can easily download whatever particular version you need - if you think about it.

Cheers,
Gary.

Same goes for Vista even when installed in "single user" mode.
After finishing the dutch template and testing it (5.8.5 and 5.8.6a), I tried the new entry in the advanced menu to see what was behind...
Klicked on cancel... and ended up with a "blank" manager.
Restored the connection with "Select computer..."

If select computer restored connection, then it just disconnected, didn't kill the service.

Rene used the single user installation, that doesn't use the service. If used in combination with the service install, it will kill the service and not show boinc.exe running in task manager again. Test it out. ;-)

Besides, Select Computer won't restart the service. It will on the other hand restart boinc.exe ... Just not as a service, so kill BM and Boinc will stop again as well.

But according to Rom the function of it is as it should work. But for that pressing Cancel should cancel you trying to stop BOINC. Hence why he'll add a confirmation for the next version.

I've done some re-testing and in most cases, the manager will try to reconnect to Boinc.exe... massage appears "BOINC manager could not connect....want to try again". Klicking Yes will restore the connection as well.
On a rare occasion connection is lost completely, using "Select computer..." will restore connection.

But not always...
I've seen Boinc.exe dissapear from the running tasks in 2 attemps of a total of approx 20.
(Windows Defender was also performing a scan at that moment)
A restart of the BM was needed in that case.

But this still leaves what Jord posted...

The cancel or X should not respond in doing anything for that matter.
I should leave the BM alone...

Luckily it's not going to be in on the public release. Maybe some time in the future, we need to test it some further. But it's probably out of 5.8.7 when that one is released tonight. ;)
