Why do they have to be so BIG? What about a toolbar that runs across the top -- like other Windows programs? That would free up more real estate for viewing columns without having to constantly scroll from side to side.

If you prefer a toolbar, then why not try a very nice program called BOINCView. It does everything BOINCManager does but only works under Windo$e. You can get it from http://boincview.amanheis.de/

PS: It works under Wine as well.
