This is a project supported by The Science Commons Initiative (The SCI) to improve the ongoing development, marketing and growth of BOINC and its use around the world. This poll only aims to collect general, anonymous information about you and how you use BOINC. We do not collect email addresses or contact information and only collect very broad demographic information in this survey. This is not the first BOINC-wide poll that has been conducted, the last poll was in 2006, but this one is the first one that will be regular and ongoing. The results of the survey will be published publicly for anyone to view after the census is complete. All results will be anonymous. We encourage you to share this survey with anyone that you know that uses BOINC and to only submit one response to this form. Thank you for supporting BOINC! We have over 450 responses to the census so far! The census will remain open until December 31st. https://app.fillout.com/flow/esDGuRswWfus |

Please know that The Science Commons Initiative is not officially (supported by) BOINC, and that this census isn't initiated by BOINC. We do not know what happens with all information you give. It will not be used to make BOINC better. |

It arrived in my system, the spam filter sidelined it, (it has been somewhat aggressive at times...), I came here to find out the validity or otherwise of the undertaking. I guess it was right. Use of BOINC is certainly in decline right now. If you read this jringo, perhaps you could post more information about who/what/why this is relevant or important. You must accept that anyone with any motivation can post something like this on an open forum, (...and, yes, I did look up and browse the website.. same comment applies). Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

This certainly has the look and feel of a scam aimed at gathering hundreds if not thousands of email addresses from BOINC users. I say this because the link in the post at the top of this thread does not go to the organisation running the "census" but to one of the many questionnaire generating sites, there is no indication of the use of the data, and this hasn't come from anyone that I recognise being a "real BOINC person", also there are the comments from the nice Mr.BOINC Moderator & Jord. |

The census is by one of the main Science Commons Initiative and Gridcoin promoters. Both use BOINC as the backbone of those projects. |

It’s not a scam. They are not asking for personal data. They are trying to increase participation. According to their podcast, it will be yearly. Btw, they host a podcast that talks about current BOINC projects. Links are on the website. |

Sure! I'll add edit these resources into the original post. My mistake for not including them the first time. (Edit: Looks like it's too late for me to edit them into the original post). The census is supported by The Science Commons Initiative, a registered 501c3 out of Delaware (status pending). Details on the org can be found at the resources below, but basically we want to rebuild the bridge of trust between academia and the public. We are fairly new, but have already put some bounties out for BOINC development. We intend to expand support in the coming months. Website: https://thesciencecommons.org/ Board Members: https://thesciencecommons.org/aboutus/ Incorporation Status: https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/Ecorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx (Search for "The Science Commons Initiative Inc" or file number "6804263") The census will help us fulfill our mission as detailed on our site. Regarding BOINC adoption, it's impossible to grow something if you don't know what you're growing. Understanding the make-up of BOINC users will help us understand different people we should be reaching out to to help grow the user-base. For example, understanding the "why" and "how" of the current user-base will help inform our messaging when reaching out to new users. Fill out the census if you wish. Don't if you don't wish. Or, if you want, come help us help BOINC and distributed computing, science communication/education, and other technological developments as well = ). |
