Need FREE Remote Desktop app recommendations for connecting my Windows PC to my Linux/Ubuntu PC so I can remote in and do system updates and start/stop BOINC or other applications on occasion. Tried web search but not finding anything free for both OS's. I currently use AnyDesk and they now have gone the way of TeamViewer of several years past in claiming that I'm using it commercially. This is not directly claimed by Any Desk just like TeamViewer did in their reply to my claim that I'm not using it commercially and I have to pay for a commercial license if I want to use the software. I'm only using it for personal use to connect 1 Windows to 1 Linux PC for remote desktop probably once or twice a week. This was the case of TeamViewer several years ago, because of "some kind of software" (they never specified BOINC but that was all it was used for) and its making many connections per day to what they claimed was "commercial websites." |

Do you think a SSH connection would suit your needs? I'm not sure what other applications you need access to, but system updates and BOINC can be simply administered through a command line terminal. If a visual desktop connection is required, I'd recommend you install a VNC server on your Ubuntu PC. Then you can use any number of free VNC Client/Viewer apps that are available to connect to it. |

RustDesk is your savor. Thanks! This looks like the best and easy to use and configure so far. I downloaded it for Windows, Ubuntu and also for Android since it looks like it might come in handy to use on some old phones running BOINC to do remote control for updates, etc. Update on my ongoing 'war' with AnyDesk: After 2 more rounds of back and forth and allowing them to 'collect additional usage details' for a month. * They insist by using BOINC on my PC's to connect to many different locations multiple times in a day, their software is being commercially used even if I only use their software one or two times per week. My counter argument was "How can that be any different than if I was using the remote PC for extensive web browsing?" |
